Sailing out of Norfolk tomorrow? Read this before you leave.

Carnival sent guests a heads up for Saturday, Oct 17:

• The Norfolk W**e Festival is downtown the same day. Expect street closures and heavy traffic.
• The eastbound Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (I-64 toward Norfolk) is closed for roadwork.
• Leave early, and follow officers and posted signs to the terminal.

Here's the easy way around it. Park in our covered garage in Chesapeake and let our free shuttle drive you downtown. The route has no tunnel. Arrive by 9:00 AM.

A cruiser in our comments said the toughest part of the trip was the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Others were trying to make sense of the tunnels around Hampton Roads.

So here's a tip for first-time Norfolk departures: check current traffic and road conditions before you leave, and allow extra travel time.

A few of our cruisers told us they arrive in Hampton Roads a day early instead of risking a long drive on sailing day.
