The winter season is a great time to get your car winter-ready. It’s important that you do some vehicle maintenance before winter begins so you can avoid any problems when the temperatures drops. Here are 5 of Chad’s tips to help keep your car in the best condition:

5 Tips from Chad to winter proof your automobile:

1. Keep a small auto handy kit in your auto for minor car troubles that might help in chilly temps. At minimum, you should have some jumper cables or a jump box in case of a dead battery, fa flashlight, tire chains and a small ratchet/screwdriver set (or multi-tool).

2. Keep an eye on the windshield wiper fluid. Warm weather windshield washer fluid (yes there are different weather temperature wash fluids) is completely different than what you’ll need for the winter. Finding Winter washer fluid (often has a percentage of alcohol) will make sure your windshield stays clean or clog your washer fluid sprayers when temperatures start dropping below freezing. Don’t forget to check the condition of your wipers or you can purchase all weather wipers from our shop.

3. Winterizing fluids (antifreeze, motor oil) and air filters. These are essential before cold weather hits. The air filter is something that often gets overlooked and can cause problems. A clogged or dirty air filter will force the engine to work harder, which means lower fuel economy and a higher likelihood of experiencing some sort of mechanical breakdown while driving on icy roads.
Anti-freeze helps your engine and other vital car parts (like the transmission) function properly in cold winter temperatures, so make sure you check your anti-freeze levels before winter arrives. By keeping it at a good level and making sure the solution is still strong enough to avoid freezing at colder temperatures, you’ll avoid problems like frozen radiators or water pumps that can cause costly damage to your vehicle if they’re not winterized correctly.
You’ll also want to make sure your motor oil is up to par for the colder driving months. Come on in and ask Chad, Jose and Sean for the recommended winter-weight motor oil is needed for your automobile.

4. Make sure your tires are ready for the winter months. First thing to check is your tire tread. Make sure you have enough tread left to make it through the winter’s snow. A good rule of thumb is to use a penny. Stick it between the tread upside down and if you can see all of Abe Lincoln’s head, it’s time to replace. Also, check your vehicle’s proper tire inflation pressures should be in your owners manual. The. check each tire to make sure it’s within the specified range.

5. To go with #1, It’s also a great idea to throw some emergency survival supplies in the trunk. Disposable handwarmers, a blanket, some shelf-stable food like protein bars and bottled water can save your life should you ever become stranded. Depending on your vehicle, it may also be a good idea to add a bag of cat litter or sand to your survival supplies. Not only can this provide better traction for rear wheel drive vehicles), but you can spread some down by your tires if you’re tires get stuck.

If you need any help with checking out your car automobile to ensure it’s in the best condition for winter give us a call at Chad’s Compete Auto Repair 856-751-2789!

Top 5 Summer Car Care Tips

Top 5 Summer Car Care TipsSummer’s sweltering temps amplify the effects that daily driving can have on your vehicle. From making sure that your air conditioning unit is ready to keep you cool to ensuring that your engine is prepped to keep you off the shoulder, summer car care should always be a priority.

Keep your vehicle in tip-top shape this summer with the following car care tips from the expert techs at Automotive Training Center!

1. Keep Your Engine Cool
Rising outdoor temperatures further heat your car’s engine, so it makes sense that an overheated motor is the number one cause of summer breakdowns. A liquid mix made up of antifreeze and water known as coolant is at the center of your vehicle’s internal cool-down process.
In the summertime, keeping an eye on coolant levels under the hood becomes exponentially important. To stay en route over roadside, make sure that you check and top off coolant levels every few weeks (at a minimum!).

2. Get Your Car’s AC Unit Inspected
Top car care tipsOne of the last things we all want to be without is cabin air conditioning during our summer drives, so this tip may already be top of mind. The reality is, an AC system that’s on its way out won’t last through the heat of the summer. It pays to get it inspected by a certified technician now to see if it will be able to stand
up to July and August scorchers.

3. Replace Your Windshield Wipers
Summer thunderstorms are known for their monsoon-equivalent rain-dumping nature. Spring is the logical time to switch out your wiper blades for a new set, especially if the same pair has already served as your winter wipers as well. And don’t forget to keep your washer fluid full throughout the season!

4. Increase Oil Change Frequency
Our schedules tend to shift in the summer time and our car’s maintenance schedules should too. If you’ve got long road trips on the horizon, a stint of towing a boat or camper in the works, or just tend to drive shorter trips more often in the summer, your oil change frequency needs to adjust accordingly. During summer travel, follow your manual’s elevated maintenance schedule. The summer schedule for your car can be found inside its owner’s manual.

5. Really Check Your Tires
Car Care Tip Check Tire PressureAs temperatures climb into the 80s and 90s, your tires are at a higher risk for a blowout. This makes monitoring pressure levels paramount. Using your vehicle’s onboard monitoring system is great, but you also want to use a manual gauge to check the pressure at least once a month during hotter weather.
Make sure that you keep up with your scheduled tire rotations and always perform a visual inspection along with your tire pressure to evaluate wear and tread life.
You may complete these fixes and checks at home or rely on a trusted automotive technician. Students enrolled in ATC’s five programs get hands-on shop experience performing these checks and changes that help customers stay comfortable and safe on the road at any time of year!
