We’re getting closer to honoring America 250 at the Air Show next month, and we’re spotlighting another important piece of American aviation you’ll see in the sky - the TBM Avenger!

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The Grumman TBM Avenger wasn’t just any aircraft. It was the Navy’s primary torpedo attack aircraft in WWII. It made its combat debut at the Battle of Midway and went on to play a major role in breaking Japanese naval power in the Pacific Theater.

Due to overwhelming demand, General Motors also produced the Avenger during WWII. Nearly 10,000 total were produced, but only about 20 are still airworthy today, and even less appear in air shows regularly.

The Erickson Aircraft Collection’s TMB Avenger was built by GM and restored to its original condition. It has the 1945 markings of a VT-40 Avenger from USS Suwannee.

SEEING IS BELIEVING
This isn’t just a display. It’s a rare, living piece of history that still takes to the sky with the same deep, unmistakable sound of the engine.

It’s an experience - the size, the sound, the history, all coming alive right in front of you.

Don’t miss your chance to see one of WWII’s top naval aircraft in person. Grab your tickets on our website and get ready for an unforgettable show. https://oregonairshow.com/hillsboro/hillsboro-tickets/

Red sky in the morning

A great memory from 2025 was standing at the edge of the runway at 6am waiting for the sun to break the horizon and the F8F Bearcat of the Erickson collection getting airborne. Given that Madras Oregon is like being in the desert, I don’t think that the British proverb “red sky in the morning, shepherds warning” applies! August 2025.

The Olympic Flight Museum is pleased to announce the 2026 Olympic Air Show on June 20-21st will feature the B-17F Flying Fortress courtesy of Erickson Aircraft Collection.
The B-17 was employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force, based at many airfields in southern England, and the Fifteenth Air Force, based in Italy, complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in the Combined Bomber Offensive to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for the invasion of France in 1944. The B-17 also participated to a lesser extent in the War in the Pacific, early in World War II, where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields. From its pre-war inception, the USAAC (later USAAF) touted the B-17 as a strategic weapon; it was a potent, high-flying, long-range bomber that was able to defend itself, and to return home despite extensive battle damage. It quickly took on mythical proportions, and widely circulated stories and photos of B-17s surviving battle damage increased its iconic status. With a service ceiling greater than any of its Allied contemporaries, the B-17 established itself as an effective weapons system, dropping more bombs than any other U.S. aircraft in World War II.
In January 2019, the aircraft was repainted to “Ye Olde Pub” in honor of the men who flew it in the skies of Germany. To book a ride in the B-17, please click here: www.ericksoncollection.com
