Tom McRae and Norm Miller organized the first Great Race, back in 1983. They worked hard to promote the event, and turned it into one of the greatest automotive events of all time. The Great Race is a time, speed, endurance rally, meaning the goal wasn't to get to the finish line first, but to precisely finish each checkpoint in a pre-determined amount of time. Each vehicle has a driver and a navigator, and the team uses a calibrated speedometer to make sure they stay on schedule, according to the day's route. It's a grand event that turns average car guys into local celebrities, as these classic cars make their way through small towns on their way across the country.

Independence Day 1986, Washington D.C. a great setting for this Throwback Thursday!

The Great American Race as it was then called traveled from Disneyland to New York City. Newspapers and TV stations across the country covered this event, which continued to grow in popularity. Fun fact: every Great American Race from 1983 through 1988 began in California.

We had a blast at the Savoy Automobile Museum over the weekend despite some rainy weather. We’re looking forward to our stop at the Savoy Automobile Museum during the 2027 Hemmings Great Race presented by Coker Tire! We’ll be stopping there in Cartersville, Georgia on Father’s Day!
