The Best of 2027 has been revealed.

From an initial field of 56 eligible vehicles, NACTOY’s 46 independent automotive journalists have selected 25 vehicles to advance in the competition for the 2027 North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year™ Awards:

🛻 4 Trucks
🚙 16 Utility Vehicles

This year’s contenders include established nameplates and all-new entries, with gasoline, hybrid and electric powertrains represented across the three categories.

The next stage comes October 20–23 at NACTOY’s annual Ride & Drive in Michigan, where jurors will evaluate the Best of 2027 vehicles back-to-back before voting to determine the finalists.

The New York International Auto Show is heading into its 127th year with strong momentum following a highly successful 2026 Show. The 2027 Show will take place March 26–April 4 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, with Media & Industry Days March 23–25.

America’s first auto show, which began in New York in 1900, continues to be one of the industry's most important places to connect automakers, media, dealers, and consumers.

The Show recently released its 2026 Auto Show Visitor Impact Report. The report found that 80% of visitors said attending the Show influenced their decision on their next vehicle, while 38% indicated that they plan to purchase or lease a new vehicle within 12 months. 42% of those 12-month purchase intenders added one or more brands to their consideration list.

In addition, 72% said the New York Auto Show was the only automotive event they had attended in the previous 12 months.

The Survey also confirmed that 92% of those who indicated that they planned to purchase a car in the next 12 months after visiting the Show did so! This information shows the importance of the New York Auto Show to car purchases.

Building on that momentum, the 2027 New York Auto Show is expected to deliver an expanded lineup of industry and consumer programs, including major new product announcements, a robust schedule of business-to-business events and new vehicle test-track experiences.

The Automotive Forum, a full-day B2B conference organized by J.D. Power, the Virginia-based National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), and the New York International Auto Show, will kick off the industry's pre-public days on Tuesday, March 23, followed by two days of media and industry programming featuring vehicle reveals, executive forums, industry insights, conferences and major automotive events.

The public Show will open Friday, March 26, with an expanded range of vehicles, technology, attractions and opportunities for consumers to get behind the wheel.

“The 2026 Show demonstrated the incredible connection between the automotive industry and New York consumers,” said Mark Schienberg, President of the New York International Auto Show. “We're taking that momentum into 2027 and building an even bigger platform for automakers, media, industry, and consumers.”

The field is set for the 2027 North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year™ (NACTOY) awards, with 25 of 56 new or substantially changed vehicles advancing to the Best of 2027 following a vote by NACTOY's independent jurors.

This year's Best of 2027 includes five cars, four trucks and 16 utility vehicles. The contenders include established nameplates alongside all-new entries, with gasoline, hybrid and electric powertrains competing across the three categories.

"This is a diverse field of vehicles that reflects the changing nature of the auto industry," said Jeff Gilbert, president of NACTOY and auto reporter for WWJ Newsradio 950 in Detroit.

"Our jurors started with 56 eligible vehicles and selected 25 to advance, representing a mix of conventional and new technologies. Now the competition becomes even more focused as we work toward selecting this year's finalists and winners."

Forty-six NACTOY jurors evaluated the initial field of 56 eligible vehicles before voting to determine which vehicles would advance to the Best of 2027.

NACTOY's independent automotive journalists from the United States, Canada and Mexico evaluate vehicles throughout the year on a range of criteria, including innovation, design, safety, performance, technology, driver satisfaction, user experience and value.

The next major step in the awards process comes Oct. 20–22, when jurors gather in Michigan for NACTOY's annual Ride & Drive. The event gives jurors the opportunity to evaluate the Best of 2027 vehicles back-to-back under similar conditions before casting votes to determine the finalists.

Three finalists in each category will be announced Nov. 19 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The 2027 North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year™ winners will be announced Jan. 14 at the Detroit Auto Show.

Update on AI -

Learn more about using AI in research and work as an automotive journalist by joining IMPA's August Zoom meeting for part 2 on artificial intelligence with Syracuse's Adam Peruta. The program is at NOON, Tuesday, Aug. 25.

In February 2025, Prof. Adam Peruta of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University joined IMPA for a highly attended session on artificial intelligence and what journalists needed to know about the state of AI and how it is affecting the industry. A year later, AI tools continue to evolve quickly, and Peruta will be returning for a follow-up session focused on what has changed, what journalists should be paying attention to now, and how AI can be useful in day-to-day reporting, research, writing, editing, and media production.

The global electric vehicle (EV) industry is rapidly consolidating around a few dominant players, with Chinese manufacturers leading the charge. At the top of the ranking is BYD, delivering an impressive 2.56 million units, far ahead of its competitors. In second place is Geely with 1.31 million units, followed by Tesla in third with 985,000 units. This top three highlights China’s overwhelming influence in EV production, alongside Tesla’s continued global presence as a leading innovator.

Beyond the top tier, traditional automotive giants are accelerating their transition to electrification. Volkswagen and SAIC Motor round out the top five, while other Chinese brands like Changan Automobile and Chery continue to expand aggressively. Meanwhile, established players such as Hyundai Motor Company, BMW, and Stellantis are scaling up EV production to remain competitive in this fast-evolving market.

Southeast Asia is emerging as a crucial growth frontier for EV adoption and manufacturing. Cities like Jakarta, Bangkok, and Ho Chi Minh City are increasingly becoming hubs for EV infrastructure development, battery investment, and consumer adoption. Governments across the region are offering incentives and building charging networks, positioning Southeast Asia as a key battleground for global EV makers seeking future growth beyond their traditional markets.
