Oftentimes, I’ll find myself wondering what in the heck has happened to some of these motorcycles that I have on the table—cussing that rusted-ass exhaust stud, or maybe even you for ordering those China-Davidson parts off Amazon.
But then I realize the history, the places, and the memories that these machines must’ve made in their lifetime. To be able to sit, talk and listen to you while you’re telling me your dad rode across the country on it in the 70’s, or how you need it shined up for a wedding anniversary—I slowly realize these things become a part of our lives, and we trust that sticking a motor in between our legs and yee-hawin’ down the road won’t kill us.
If this dude, Tim Duffy, would’ve brought me this bike on September 12th, I would’ve been like, “Damn bro! A Dyna isn’t a daggum Z71! 😂 What’d you do, hit the ATV trails this weekend?” Then he’d probably crack a smile and tell me the real story. Duffy rode this Super Glide straight to Ground Zero, where his efforts helped numerous people; where the tower collapsed on him and he survived.
All I know is that I would’ve been damn proud to have been his mechanic if he hopped on that thing, pulled the choke, and it fired the first time.
Today, we remember and honor those who aren’t here to share stories like these anymore. May we choose not to pass judgment or criticism until we have the whole picture.
Today, we are all American.
On September 11th, we will never forget.
