🚛 A Small Air Leak Can Turn Into a Big Breakdown Fast

Last night we responded to a service call for an air leak on a tractor caused by a broken airline fitting.

After inspecting the truck, we found the airline had been routed too high above the frame rail and was catching on the king pin during trailer hookup. That contact damaged the line and caused the leak. The driver attempted to tape the fitting together in hopes to make it to a repair shop, the tape did not stand a chance.

A prior repair company replaced the height control valve and installed a 45 degree fitting which was causing the improper air line routing.

We replaced the damaged fitting with the correct 90 degree swivel fitting, corrected the airline routing, and verified the system was leak-free before putting the truck back into service.

A small air leak can lead to:

With the Midwest heat we’ve been experiencing lately, don’t get caught without A/C in your truck.

A customer recently called because his A/C was blowing hot air. When I arrived, I checked the vent temperature with the A/C on max and found it was blowing nearly 100°F, even though it was only 85°F outside.

During my inspection, I noticed the A/C compressor had recently been replaced. After connecting my manifold gauges, I found the system pressures were abnormally high and equalized, indicating something wasn’t right.

The driver explained that after the repair, he tried recharging the system himself using a can of refrigerant from the parts store. Unfortunately, the refrigerant wasn’t added correctly, which left the system improperly charged.

I recovered the refrigerant, pulled the system into a vacuum to verify there were no leaks, and then recharged it with the manufacturer’s specified amount of refrigerant (4 lbs. 0 oz.).

Within seconds, the vent temperature dropped to 63°F, and the truck was back to blowing cold air.

The entire diagnosis and repair took less than an hour.

This is a great example of why A/C systems should be serviced with the proper equipment and procedures. A simple charging mistake can keep your system from cooling properly and may even lead to more expensive repairs down the road.

I’ve seen many technicians chase ghost codes for days to figure out it was a software compatibility issue all along. This particular truck has 3 modules that need software updates. 95% of the codes the unit has will be addressed by the updates. Of course there are still a couple minor issues to be worked out after the updates are completed. This is what separates a reputable service company from the many competing companies popping up left and right. Every day I witness companies dumping tons of money into a truck based on the advise of under trained techs in the field.
