⚓️ RESCUED: Joint Effort Saves Mariner Off Montauk ⚓️
A rapid, coordinated response between Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, Station Montauk, and the National Guard saved a life on Tuesday after a commercial fishing vessel sank 3 miles southwest of Montauk.
The rescue kicked off at 11:24 a.m. when watchstanders received a distress signal from an Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) registered to the 39-foot commercial fishing vessel Miss Alexa. With no direct contact with the operator, a massive joint search was quickly launched.
A True Team Effort:
🔹USCG Station Montauk deployed a rescue boat crew.
🔹The Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing diverted an HC-130 Hercules aircrew to the scene, which spotted debris and directed the search.
🔹The New York Army National Guard diverted two HH-60 Black Hawk helicopters to assist.
Thanks to the seamless teamwork overhead and on the water, the Station Montauk crew located and safely recovered the mariner from the water. The mariner was found clinging to an EPIRB without a life jacket, recovered in stable condition, and transferred to local EMS for evaluation.
⚠️ SAFETY REMINDER: A registered and properly functioning EPIRB served as the sole distress signal to alert and guide rescue crews directly to the vessel's location. Ensure all emergency beacons are registered, fully functional, and easily accessible before getting underway.
Bravo Zulu to all the watchstanders and crews involved from U.S. Coast Guard Station Montauk, the 106th Rescue Wing, and the New York Army National Guard!
