Porsche Unveils New 911 GT4 R Customer Race Car for 2027

Porsche has officially revealed the all-new 911 GT4 R, marking a significant shift in the manufacturer's customer racing lineup. For the first time, Porsche's global GT4 program will be built around the iconic 911 platform, replacing the Cayman-based GT4 race cars that have represented the brand in the category for nearly a decade.

Scheduled to make its racing debut in 2027, the 911 GT4 R has been developed for customer teams competing in GT4 championships around the world, including IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge and SRO GT4 America in North America.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six boxer engine derived from the current Porsche 911 GT3 and 911 Cup programs. In unrestricted form, the engine produces up to 520 horsepower (382 kW) and 346 lb-ft of torque. As with all GT4 machinery, final output will vary depending on Balance of Performance regulations.

The engine is paired with a six-speed sequential gearbox featuring paddle-shift operation and a four-disc racing clutch. Porsche has carried over much of the proven drivetrain technology from its successful 911 Cup platform, creating a natural progression for drivers moving from one-make competition into GT racing.

Compared to the outgoing Cayman GT4 Clubsport, the new 911 GT4 R features a wider track, increased power, upgraded motorsport electronics, and a more advanced chassis package designed to improve drivability, consistency, and overall performance.

The suspension utilizes dual-adjustable dampers and multiple spring-rate options, allowing teams to tailor setup characteristics for various tracks and racing formats. GT4 regulations require narrower wheels than those used on the 911 Cup car, and the GT4 R utilizes a traditional five-lug wheel mounting system rather than center-lock hubs.

Aerodynamically, the car shares much of its architecture with the current 911 Cup while incorporating GT4-specific development. A manually adjustable rear wing offers 11 positions, while extensive use of natural-fiber composite materials helps reduce weight. Components including the doors, engine cover, aerodynamic elements, and portions of the cockpit are constructed using these lightweight materials.

Inside the cockpit, drivers are greeted by a modern racing environment featuring a 10.3-inch digital display, integrated data logging, GPS-based telemetry systems, and configurable ballast options to meet varying Balance of Performance requirements.

The introduction of the 911 GT4 R reflects the continued growth of the global GT4 category, which has become one of the most competitive and accessible forms of professional customer racing. Since entering GT4 competition in 2016, Porsche has produced more than 1,500 GT4 race cars and accumulated championship-winning success across major racing series worldwide.

For Porsche customers, the new GT4 R creates a clearer progression through the brand's motorsport ladder, from Porsche Sprint Challenge and Carrera Cup competition to GT4 championships and eventually GT3 racing, while remaining within the familiar 911 ecosystem.

The Porsche 911 GT4 R is expected to be available for customer delivery ahead of the 2027 season with a starting price of approximately $375,500 USD.

Growth in the Australian IRC Racing Series has come off the back of the introduction of the SD Class for rising stars of motorsport.

Previously a category exclusive for Pro-Am drivers, the SD model was introduced to suit young drivers aiming to make the next step in their motorsport career.

The SD is designed to test a young driver through the removal of driver aids and select aerodynamic aids.

Reigning Carrera Cup champion Dylan O'Keeffe was behind the wheel at Queensland Raceway and provided an insight on the SD.
