As part of the annual Operation Dry Water campaign, NC Wildlife Law Enforcement is increasing water patrols this weekend to reduce impaired boating.

Alcohol remains the leading contributing factor in recreational boater deaths. So far this year, 62 boating incidents have occurred in North Carolina and nine were fatal. Last year in North Carolina, boating incidents resulted in 26 fatalities.

Officers urge everyone to operate vessels sober, designate a responsible operator and wear a life jacket to help prevent tragedies on the water.

☀️🚤 Boating Season is Here on Lake Norman! 🌊

As temperatures rise and boat traffic increases across Lake Norman, the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office Lake Patrol reminds everyone to boat responsibly and safely this season.

Before heading out on the water, remember:

🦺 Have properly fitting life jackets for everyone onboard

👧 NC law requires children under 13 to wear a life jacket while the vessel is underway

🚫 Never operate a vessel while impaired

⚠️ Watch for shallow water, debris, and changing lake conditions

👀 Stay alert and avoid distracted boating

🏊 Keep a safe distance from swimmers and other vessels

🚔 NC law prohibits operating above no-wake speed within 100 feet of a law enforcement vessel displaying flashing blue lights

🌉 Stay at least 50 yards (150 feet) from man-made structures unless operating at no-wake speed

⛅ Check weather conditions before heading out

💡 Ensure required safety equipment and navigation lights are onboard and working after dark
