Actual Phone Conversation Today...
[Sound of a phone ringing, followed by the shop line clicking open]
Shop (CT 4x4): Thanks for calling CT 4x4. How can I help you today?
Client: Hey there. I have a 2024 4Runner, and I’ve got some front springs, upper and lower control arms, and tie rods that I need put on my truck. I already have all the parts, so I’m just looking to get a labor quote from you guys.
Shop: Okay, copy that. You mentioned you have the springs already. What is currently on your truck right now? What shock setup are we actually installing these springs onto?
Client: Uh... a 2024 4Runner.
Shop: [Patiently] Right, I got the vehicle year and model. But what is on the truck now? What trim level is it, and is the suspension currently stock or has it been modified?
Client: Oh. It has an Eibach Stage 2 kit on it right now.
Shop: Gotcha. So, what brand and model of springs do you have, and what specific shock are they going on?
Client: [Slightly annoyed] What does it matter? They’re just springs. Can’t you guys just put them on?
Shop: Well, if you are supplying your own parts, I need to know exactly what we are installing so I can give you an accurate quote.
Client: I don't get why it matters what kind of brand or product I'm installing!
Shop: Because different aftermarket products have completely different installation times. For example, installing an upper control arm with adjustable heim joints can take hours longer to set up and dial in than a standard factory-style lower control arm. If I’m quoting you a price, I need to know exactly what parts we are dealing with.
Client: That makes absolutely no sense. A lower arm is a lower arm, and a spring is a spring. It shouldn’t matter what brand it is.
Shop: [Sighs quietly, realizing they won't get specifics] Alright. My quote is $1,400 with an alignment... give or take another $2,000 depending on what you actually end up bringing me.
Client: [Pause] ...Okay, thank you.
