The Royal Gorge Route Railroad leaves the historic Santa Fe Depot in downtown Cañon City and follows the Arkansas River deep into the gorge, where granite walls rise more than 1,000 feet overhead. Pick a Vista Dome, coach, or dining experience with meals cooked right on board. Tip: the railroad runs year-round, including holiday trains like the Santa Express, so check the schedule and reserve ahead for the seat you want. Ever stood on a bridge 956 feet above a river? The Royal Gorge Bridge, built in 1929, stretches 1,257 wooden planks across the gorge with the Arkansas River far below. General admission covers the bridge, aerial gondolas, playland, and theater, and thrill-seekers can add the Cloudscraper Zip Line or the Via Ferrata. Tip: check the weather before you go, since the park operates weather permitting.
