Truck came in last week. 2001 Chevy 2500, 6.0 gas, misfire on cylinders 5 and 6 at idle.
Customer had already been to another shop. They swapped the coil packs around, the misfire didnāt move, and they told him he had internal engine problems. Thatās a big pill to swallow, thatās engine money.
We put a smoke machine on it. Leaking injector O-rings on cylinder 6, pulling unmetered air right into the cylinder. Fuel trims were sitting positive on both banks at idle and cleaning up off idle, which is exactly what an air leak does.
O-rings. Not an engine.
Hereās what I want people to take from this. If you donāt feel good about what you were told, go get a second opinion. Youāre not being difficult and youāre not insulting anybody. Itās your money and your truck.
Any shop worth a dime will not be bothered by you double checking.
And to the guys turning wrenches, there is nothing wrong with saying āIām not sure, this is past what I can chase down.ā Nobody knows everything. Whatās wrong is guessing out loud and letting somebody walk out the door thinking they need an engine when they need a set of O-rings.
Thatās not a skill problem, thatās an integrity problem.
Weād rather tell you the truth and lose the job than sell you a repair you donāt need.
