1950s Towmotor electric toy forklift and salesman sample, manufactured by the Urbana Manufacturing Company in Urbana, Ohio/Illinois, and originally designed by the Crosby Research Foundation (associated with Bing Crosby).
Key Details & History
Manufacturer: Urbana Manufacturing Co. (Urbana, OH/IL)
Design/Concept: Created as a working miniature promotional model and salesman sample for real-life Towmotor industrial machinery dealers to demonstrate warehouse mechanization, famously branded with the “The One-Man-Gang” decal.
Construction: Heavy pressed steel and cast metal components with a red enamel finish, chain-drive articulated mast, twin forks, rolling rubber wheels, and a rear-mounted electric motor with a power cord/controller.
Functions: Designed to steer, drive forward/reverse, tilt the mast forward/backwards, and raise/lower the forks.
Value & Rarity: Because they were distributed in limited quantities directly to industrial equipment dealers rather than toy stores, they are scarce collector's items
