The National Weather Service is predicting a hard freeze, freezing rain, extremely cold wind chill factors and possible snow for the Southeast Texas region including Jasper County over the weekend and into early next week.
We recommend that everyone take proper precautions now to winterize water well systems, pipes and faucets, as well as provide protection for pets and livestock.
Remember the 4 P’s:
People - Ensure your home and your family are ready for this winter event and check on family members and neighbors.
Pets (and livestock) - Ensure that protection is in place to keep them warm enough to get through multiple days of below freezing temperatures.
Plants - Bring plants under cover if possible and blanket or wrap small plants and trees that are susceptible to the cold.
Pipes - Check water well systems, pipes and faucets to ensure that they are properly wrapped, heated or drained.
Also, ensure that home heating systems are functioning properly and well-ventilated.
Check smoke detectors and home gas detectors to ensure they are in proper working order. In the event of a power outage, please use extreme caution when using portable generators, and do not place them indoors while in operation.
If roadways become covered with snow or ice, please try to stay off the roads and highways unless necessary.
Stay clear of downed power lines that may have fallen from trees or the weight of ice and report it immediately.
Be safe and thank you for looking out for one another.
