OCTOBER IS SLOW DOWN, MOVE OVER AWARENESS MONTH

Every six days, on average, a tow truck operator is killed on America’s roadways. Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community forever changed. These are people who leave home each day to help others, and who deserve to make it home safely.

All 50 states have Slow Down, Move Over laws. Yet, roadside workers continue to lose their lives when drivers fail to take these simple, potentially life-saving actions.

When you see flashing lights on the roadside:
🛑 SLOW DOWN.
↔️ MOVE OVER when it is safe to do so.
👀 PAY ATTENTION.

This October, and every month, remember that the few seconds it takes to slow down and move over could save someone’s life.

Their lives are worth more than a few seconds of your time.

WASHINGTON STATE TRAVEL ALERT!

This morning, 23 engine room employees called in sick. Every employee qualified to fill those positions has declined to fill them and keep the ferries running. All of the employees calling in sick, and declining to fill those vacancies, are represented by the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA) who represent engine room employees. The ferries cannot run without these roles being filled. As a result, 13 of our 18 ferries are not in service. We understand how disruptive this is to thousands of Washingtonians. We expect our employees to return to work as soon as possible.

The employees who work in the engine room play a vital role in providing WSF’s safe service, which is why Staff Chief Engineers have a base salary of $157,000, and can make more than $350,000 a year with overtime, as well as annual sick and vacation leave, and retirement accrual.

All WSF vessels are fully staffed at the beginning of every service day at U.S. Coast Guard required levels. When an employee calls in sick, request dispatchers work to fill the position as quickly as possible. When those positions aren’t filled, the boat cannot sail, which is what we’re experiencing today across 13 of the 18 vessels currently in service.

We had a great time sponsoring and participating in the Wilkeson Eagles #1409 4x4 Show. We put the ol’ spit shine to er’ on our old faithful 4x4 Wrecker. That’s about as clean as that old girl gets. It was exciting to see our friends from Freds Towing & Recovery there to participate as well. Good times had with a great group of people bringing in money to be invested back into the community by “people helping people”. The Carbon Glacier Mavericks took home the “LIFTED” trophy for best represented 4x4 club!

Burnett Bridge closed due to a fatality. Use alternate routes like Lower Burnett Rd E or A P Tubbs Rd E/Johns Rd E from 162/165.

UPDATE: The bridge is back open.

WSDOT just called, they anticipate the Burnett Bridge to be closed for several hours and will likely not re-open until this evening. They did not give additional information.

Lower Burnett/ Fettig Road is not a great detour route. It is very narrow. If possible use Johns/ Tubbs Road and SR 162.
