This 2014 GMC came in after a wiring harness fire. The harness and fuse box were replaced, only to find that nothing wanted to communicate. On newer vehicles, all the control modules communicate with each other through the CAN bus, so one wiring issue can shut down communication across the entire vehicle. After hours of tracing circuits, verifying connections, finding the problems, and reprogramming all the control modules, we finally got this thing to start and move under its own power again. Jobs like this are a perfect example of why wiring repairs take time, patience is key when you're dealing with a massive electrical repair.

I’m probably standing there staring at a vehicle, covered in grease, arguing with myself about a problem that has personally offended me.
You might just drive by thinking I’ve completely lost my mind.
But when your vehicle is sitting in the shop and I’m the one responsible for figuring out why it’s acting stupid, it’ll all make sense.

Older intake manifolds can warp over the years from heat cycles, age, and repeated use. You can install a brand-new gasket and still end up with a vacuum leak because the manifold itself isn’t sealing correctly anymore. After every repair, I go back through the vehicle and make sure everything is working the way it should, including making sure the emissions systems and monitors pass, I don’t want to hand a customer their keys, watch them pull out of the parking lot, and have the check engine light come right back on.

The part that goes on your vehicle matters. Fit, quality, specifications, and reliability can make a big difference, especially on certain vehicles where aftermarket parts simply don’t perform the same as the original equipment.
And here’s something every customer should pay attention to, make sure the shop is actually installing the parts they charged you for. If you’re paying for OEM, you have every right to know what’s being installed on your vehicle. Ask questions. Ask to see the parts. Keep your receipts.

Over time, normal wear, excessive heat, contaminated fluid, or improper lubrication can cause the thrust washers and bearings to wear down. Once that happens, transmission endplay can increase beyond specification, which can lead to clutch pack misalignment, abnormal noises, harsh or delayed shifting, and accelerated wear of other internal components.

One thing I see all the time is customers putting off maintenance because the labor time makes a job that sounds simple look expensive.
Take a 2003 Chevy TrailBlazer, for example. A valve cover gasket and the spark plug tube seals might sound like a straightforward gasket replacement. The parts themselves aren't necessarily expensive, so a customer naturally thinks, “How can this cost that much?”

The answer is labor and access.

On older vehicles, a simple repair on paper doesn't always mean a simple repair in the engine bay. You may have to remove other components just to get access to the valve cover, carefully work around wiring and hoses, clean the mating surfaces, replace the gasket and spark plug seals, and then put everything back together correctly. The actual gasket may only take minutes to install once you're there, but getting to it and putting everything back together is what takes the time.
