Some of the best views are the ones you have to work a little harder to find.

One of our guests sent us this shot of Sting tucked into the red rock outside Moab — framed by sandstone and looking right at home in the Utah desert.

Perched high above the San Juan Mountains, this abandoned tramway tension station once kept thousands of feet of stationary track cable under constant tension.

The heavy support cables that carried the ore buckets entered the building from each direction, passed over massive pulleys, and were connected to enormous timber counterweight boxes filled with rock. As the cables stretched with changing temperatures and years of use, gravity kept the tension nearly constant.

Meanwhile, the moving haul rope simply passed through the station, pulling bucket after bucket across the mountainside.

More than a century later, the ore is gone, but the engineering still tells its story.

Some places don't disappear overnight.

They fade slowly—one rusted cable, one collapsed building, one forgotten trail at a time.

These tram buckets once carried tons of ore down the mountain every day. Today, they're one of the last reminders of the people who built lives in places most travelers will never see.

Some places don't need a campground reservation.

They just require a little more effort to reach.

Our last guest spent last weekend exploring Colorado's San Juan Mountains in our Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392. After a day of winding mountain trails, we found an incredible campsite just as the last light disappeared behind the peaks.

A few minutes later the iKamper was open, dinner was cooking, and the only sounds left were the wind and a nearby creek.

It's hard to imagine a better way to end the day.

Not every abandoned mine tells its story on its own. Sometimes the best way to understand Colorado's mining history is to step inside one that's still being cared for.

We recently toured the Phoenix Gold Mine in Idaho Springs, and it was a great experience. Our guide, Freddy, did an outstanding job explaining the geology, mining methods, milling process, and the history behind the operation. You can tell he genuinely enjoys sharing the story of the mine.

If you're looking for a family-friendly way to experience a real underground gold mine, I'd definitely recommend checking out Phoenix Gold Mine.

The miners who built this operation probably didn't have much time to stop and admire the view.

More than a century later, the machinery sits silent above the San Juan Mountains, overlooking the same rugged landscape that drew people here in the first place.
