Is your car becoming a winter home for unwanted guests?
When a vehicle sits for long periods of time — especially outside — mice, squirrels and other small animals can sometimes make their way under the hood. Unfortunately, they don’t always just make a nest. Rodents may chew on wiring, insulation, hoses and other components, which can lead to some surprisingly expensive repairs.
A few ways to help discourage critters:
- Drive the vehicle regularly when possible. Cars that sit untouched for long periods can be more inviting.
- Keep leaves, birdseed, pet food and other food sources away from where the vehicle is parked.
- Keep the area around the car clean and avoid piles of leaves, brush or clutter nearby.
- Take an occasional look under the hood, especially if the car hasn’t been driven recently.
- Watch for signs like nesting material, droppings, chewed insulation or a strange smell.
- If your vehicle suddenly develops warning lights or electrical problems after sitting, animal damage is one possibility worth checking.
One more thing: be careful before starting a vehicle that has been sitting for a while. An animal may have made itself comfortable somewhere you can’t immediately see.
We see some pretty unusual things under the hood from time to time. A quick inspection now can be a lot easier — and cheaper — than repairing chewed wiring later.
