Still fighting a sticking throttle and rough idle, but today Jeff Ford is taking his 1964 Ford Falcon out on the road to demonstrate why the factory Ford 303 3-speed manual transmission is so frustrating to drive.

Between the massive 40% RPM drop on the 2-3 shift and turning high RPMs at 75-80 MPH interstate speeds, the 3-speed just doesn’t cut it. He compares the Ford 303 gear ratios to the legendary Toploader 4-speed and modern 5-speed overdrive setups (like Modern Driveline T5 conversions).

He came to Daytona in February 1963 with empty pockets and no ride for the 500 just a big man's hope of catching on with somebody's team.

Then he watched a friend's car catch f*re.

Marvin Panch was testing an experimental Ford powered Maserati when it flipped, trapping him inside as flames tore through the wreckage. While others froze, DeWayne "Tiny" Lund a 6-foot-5 journeyman racer known more for his size than his stats vaulted the fence and ran straight into the f*re. He and a handful of other men reached into the f*ames and dragged Panch out just before the car was fully consumed.

Panch survived with severe burns. From his hospital bed, he did something remarkable: he asked the Wood Brothers to put Lund in his car for the Daytona 500.

Ten days after running into a burning wreck with nothing to gain, Tiny Lund driving a race he had no business winning coasted across the finish line on fumes and took the checkered flag. It remains one of the most improbable victories in NASCAR history.

Lund and four other rescuers were awarded the Carnegie Medal for Heroism. He never forgot why he did it: "Marvin would have done the same for us.
