Who here is guilty of the "Dish Soap & Bucket" exterior wash?
We've all seen it done: grabbing a bottle of Dawn dish soap and a sponge from under the kitchen sink to wash the car on a nice summer weekend. Yes, it will get rid of the dirt but its one of the worst products you can out on automotive clear coat.
Why Household Cleaners Damage Paint:
• Strips protective barriers:
Dish soap is an aggressive degreaser designed to break down food oils. It instantly strips away wax, sealant, or ceramic protection, leaving your raw clear coat vulnerable to UV rays and bird droppings.
• Dries out rubber & trim:
Regular use dries out door seals, window trim, and wiper blades, turning them gray and brittle over time.
• The "Dirty Sponge" effect:
Standard sponges drag dirt particles across the paint, carving microscopic swirl marks into the clear coat that show up as spiderwebs in direct sunlight.
The Safe-Wash Method:
• The Two-Bucket System with Grit Guards:
Use one bucket for soapy water and a second bucket of plain water to rinse your wash mitt.
Every time you wipe a panel, dunk and scrub your mitt against the grit guard at the bottom of the rinse bucket to drop trapped dirt before picking up fresh soap. This prevents rubbing grit back into the paint.
• Always Wash Wheels First:
Brake dust contains sharp metallic particles. Clean your wheels and tires using a dedicated bucket, brushes, and a pH-balanced wheel cleaner before touching the paint, so brake dust doesn't splash onto freshly cleaned body panels.
• Use a Microfiber Wash Mitt & pH-Neutral Soap:
Ditch old sponges and bath towels for high-pile plush microfiber mitts. Use a pH-neutral car wash shampoo that lubricates dirt so it slides off the panel smoothly without stripping your wax.
• Ditch the Bath Towel for Drying:
Household bath towels scratch soft clear coats. Use a large, dedicated microfiber drying towel or a leaf blower/car dryer to blow water out of side mirrors, door jambs, and emblems without touching the paint.
• Add a Quick "Drying Aid":
Mist a spray wax or quick detailer onto the wet panel before drying. This adds extra lubrication to prevent drying towel swirls while leaving behind a quick layer of shine and UV protection.
