2019 Holiday Season Impaired Driving Prevention

Buzzed DrivingThe holiday season is right around the corner. As we prepare for festivities with family and friends, NHTSA wants to remind all drivers of the dangers of "buzzed driving".

November 29 - December 10, 2019

Drive Sober or Get Pulled OverYou have to choose your role before drinking begins: will you drink or will you drive? Remember, even if you only have a little bit to drink and think you’re "okay to drive," you could still be over the legal limit.

Drive HighDrug-impaired driving is also a problem on America’s highways. Like drunk driving, drugged driving is impaired driving, which means that it is dangerous and illegal. Whether the drug is legally prescribed or illegally obtained, driving while drug-impaired poses a threat to the driver, vehicle passengers, and other road users.

THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Each year, the Thanksgiving holiday results in millions of travelers on the road, en route to and from their holiday destination. With your help, NHTSA wants to ensure drivers and their passengers are safe during this special time of year.

During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in 2017, there were 365 passenger vehicle occupants killed in vehicle crashes across the nation.

Two recent trends have sprung from the Thanksgiving holiday: “Blackout Wednesday” and “Danksgiving". These trends highlight, and even encourage, the heavy consumption of alcohol and ma*****na throughout the long holiday weekend.

We need to remind vehicle drivers that impaired driving of any kind - whether drugged or drunk - is dangerous and illegal in all 50 States, Puerto Rico, and Washington, DC. Whether the drug was legally prescribed or illegally obtained, drug-impaired driving poses a threat to the drivers, their passengers, and other road users.

To help spread the word about the dangers of these trends, NHTSA encourages our organization to join in a social media blitz featuring the hashtags and to help deliver lifesaving messages into the public conversation and encourage positive actions that can help reduce danger on the roadways.

On “Blackout Wednesday,” the focus will be to remind drivers that Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving. Likewise, on “Danksgiving,” we will focus on raising awareness about the dangers of drug-impaired driving with the campaign message If You Feel Different, You Drive Different. It doesn’t matter what term you use: If a person is feeling a little high, buzzed, stoned, wasted, or drunk, he or she is impaired and should never get behind the wheel.

On October 29, 2019, a concerned pediatrician alerted NHTSA about safety concerns regarding child seats being sold in the United States.

Parents and caregivers should be aware of signs that a car seat does not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and may pose significant risk to an infant or other vehicle occupant in the event of a crash. Some of these telltale signs may include seats without lower anchor attachments, without proper labeling, lacking a chest clip, or only secured by a seat belt crossed over the seat and not correctly installed.

A parent's priority is always to keep their child safe - whether at home, at school, or in the car. Please make sure that your child (and all your passengers) are buckled up in the car. More than that, make sure that your children are buckled up in the right seat for their age and size, and if under age 13, are in the back seat.

Join us in our mission to ensure all Americans are safe in their cars, every trip, every time.

So, it's time for a reminder to prepare your car for the blizzards to come and to adjust our driving habits to match those conditions. Some of these tips may seem obvious, but we see folks ignoring what some many consider to be obvious all the time.

You know this stuff. Just be sure to do it.

Halloween is meant to be scary, but not when it comes to driving ... yet, when it comes to impaired driving, Halloween can turn the roads into a horror fest.

Prep for a guaranteed successful trip.

I am a planner. I always have been. If you’re not, you’ll likely smirk at my pre-trip process of loading my smartphone with everything I might need on vacation — from contacts to tickets to maps to walking directions. But hear me out, you might benefit from this approach too. It feels great to...

Less Daylight = More Danger for Pedestrians
Daylight Saving Time Ends November 3rd

We set our clocks back one hour on November 3rd. As the sun rises later and sets earlier, darkness and glare can impair a driver's vision. Pedestrians are especially vulnerable during this time.

Pedestrians need to:

Be visible. Wear bright or reflective clothing. Carry a flashlight.
Be predictable. Always cross at a crosswalk. Follow the rules of the road.

Halloween is an Opportunity to Teach Pedestrian Safety

Halloween is an opportunity to teach children about traffic safety. Explain to them why they will wear reflective clothing as part of their costumes and the importance of carrying a flashlight. Set a good example. Walk with your children or have them walk with a group led by an adult.

Drivers should avoid neighborhoods during peak trick-or-treating times. Always buckle-up, avoid distractions, and plan ahead for a safe ride home after a Halloween celebration.
