This is not Kitsap related, but it kind of is. we are dealing with corporate glass chains and franchise systems that acquire local independent businesses instead of competing. Safelite in particular is rapidly accelerating their consolidation efforts. They are actively destroying our communities and sending our local dollars elsewhere. We at valueGLASS are fighting back!

THEY DIDN’T BEAT LOUIS’ AUTO GLASS. THEY BOUGHT IT.

For nearly a century, Louis’ Auto Glass was a locally owned Northwest Washington institution. Founded in 1929 and operated by four generations of the Adelstein family, Louis’ built its reputation from locations in Bellingham, Lynden and Mount Vernon, serving families and businesses throughout Whatcom and Skagit counties. The company promoted its deep community roots, including support for nearly 50 local organizations. Louis’ own website announces that it is now part of Safelite—even while much of the old “family-owned” language remains.

Now Louis’ is part of Safelite.

The photographs tell the story. The Louis’ name is still hanging on the building, but Safelite’s corporate red branding has already been bolted underneath it. The parking lot is filling with identical corporate vans. A local identity built over generations is gradually being covered by the image of a national corporation.

This is what corporate consolidation looks like.

Safelite did not spend nearly 100 years earning the trust of Bellingham, Lynden, Mount Vernon and the surrounding communities.

It purchased the company that already had it.

Why win customers through honest competition when a corporation can acquire the locations, workforce, customer base, name recognition and community goodwill of an established independent shop?

The former owners had every right to sell. But the people of Northwest Washington also have every right to understand what disappeared in that transaction:

Another independent competitor.
Another locally accountable business.
Another piece of Bellingham-area history.
Another choice for local consumers.

The signs may temporarily display both names, but Louis’ own website now announces that the company is part of the Safelite family.

Corporate acquisitions do not create more competition.

They eliminate it.
