Slow Down, Move Over Day is a critical reminder to protect the emergency responders and tow truck operators working tirelessly along our highways. When you see flashing lights, move over and give them the room needed to stay safe. Lives depend on it!

Thank you for trusting TCR on your most challenging days. We look forward to getting you back on the road quickly and safely.

The Next Time You See Flashing Lights, Move Over. Think of Ben Moore.

Ben Moore is a heavy-duty tow operator with Doug Yates Towing & Recovery in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He is a husband, a dad, a brother, and an uncle. On October 1, while responding to a disabled tractor-trailer on Interstate 24, Ben was struck by a passing vehicle. The driver has since been cited for violating Tennessee's Move Over Law.

Ben took every precaution his job requires. His amber lights were on, his reflective warning triangles were out, and he was in high-visibility gear. All Doug Yates heavy-duty drivers complete Traffic Incident Management (TIMS) training, and select operators are also TRIP certified. Despite every one of those protections, a distracted driver nearly took his life.

The Road Ahead

The list of injuries is long. Ben's right leg below the knee was shattered. His left leg is broken, along with a fractured hand and a fractured left foot. He has deep wounds across his left leg, thigh, and hip that had to be cleaned and closed. He is facing at least one more surgery in the coming weeks.

Today, Ben is spending three to four hours a day in physical and occupational therapy, relearning how to stand and walk. Right now he needs help with everything, including getting to the bathroom. In his own words: "This is going to be a long road. A long road that I'm scared of."

His immediate goal is a simple one: to stand up and take five steps on his own by December 31.

Ben estimates he is at least twelve months from being back behind the wheel of a heavy-duty wrecker, and it could be longer.

Why This Matters to Every Driver

Tow operators work only a few feet from traffic moving at high speeds. They work in the rain, in the dark, and in the cold, so that someone else's bad day can end safely. Every state has a Move Over Law, but a law only works when drivers follow it.

When you see flashing lights on the shoulder, whether it is a tow truck, a police car, an ambulance, or a road crew, do four things: slow down, move over, put the phone down, and pay attention. Ben did everything right the evening he was hit. The only thing that failed was the distracted driver.

How You Can Help Ben and His Family

Ben's family, and his family at Doug Yates Towing & Recovery, have rallied around him. You can help too. His family has set up a GoFundMe to assist with his recovery: gofundme.com/f/support-ben-moores-recovery.

If you cannot give, please share this post. Somewhere tonight, another operator will be standing on the side of a highway helping a stranger. The next life saved could be because someone read Ben's story and remembered to move over.
Ben, we are pulling for you. Five steps by December 31. Then the next five.

TCR Towing & Recovery, proudly owned by Tommy Ray and his son, T.C. Ray, celebrated its 45th anniversary in April. Since its founding in 1981, TCR has grown from a single one-ton wrecker operation to the largest heavy-duty towing company between Birmingham and Atlanta.

The company began in April 1981 when Tommy Ray and his wife, Patricia Ray, purchased a 76 service station in Bremen, GA. Starting with one single-line one-ton wrecker, the business quickly expanded, purchasing the first rollback truck in Haralson County in 1985. Co-founder Patricia Ray, who passed away in 2024, was the driving force behind the business operations, leaving her role as a bank branch manager to become TCR’s full-time bookkeeper and office manager in 1989. Her legacy of hard work and business acumen continues to live on at TCR.

This episode of Moments with the Mayor takes us to the front porch of TCR Towing & Recovery, where Mayor Sewell enjoys a little rocking chair conversation with Tommy and TC!

They talk about the important role TCR plays as a community helper...showing up when people need them, with the equipment and expertise to get the job done. We recently got to experience that generosity firsthand.

When we found ourselves needing help setting the monuments at our Police Memorial, TCR stepped up without hesitation. They donated their equipment, time, and expertise to place two incredibly large and heavy granite memorials and managed to set both perfectly on the very first try!

It was no small task, and we are incredibly grateful to TCR for answering the call and helping us complete such a meaningful project honoring those who serve and protect our community.

Mayor Sewell also talks with Tommy and TC about their equipment, the work they do every day, and where they hope to take the business next.

And it’s not all towing and recovery! She gets TC talking about another passion of his ... music ... and what keeps him busy when he’s not helping people on the road.

Pull up a rocking chair and join us for another Moments with the Mayor as we get to know the people and businesses that help keep our community moving!

TCR is proud to support Higgins General Hospital and our hometown community with the Georgia HEART Rural tax program! We challenge other local businesses to support healthcare in our community through the HEART program. For more information on how you can support go to www.georgiaheart.org.

A Partnership Built on Serving the Community in Times of Need

TCR Towing & Recovery, LLC and Higgins General Hospital share a common purpose: serving the community when people need help most.

For more than four decades, TCR has responded to emergencies across west Georgia and east Alabama, providing roadside assistance, accident recovery, heavy-duty towing and transportation services 24 hours a day.

As a family-owned business rooted in Bremen and Haralson County, TCR’s team is often among the first to arrive when individuals and families face unexpected crises on the road. In much the same way, Higgins General Hospital stands ready to provide lifesaving medical care, emergency services and access to healthcare for residents of Haralson County and the surrounding region.

By participating in the Georgia HEART Hospital Program for the past three years, TCR Towing has redirected a portion of its state tax dollars back into the local community by supporting Higgins General Hospital. Through the program, those tax dollars can be invested directly into local healthcare resources that benefit TCR’s employees, customers, families and neighbors.

“We are grateful to local businesses like TCR Towing that recognize the Georgia HEART Hospital Program as an opportunity to support healthcare close to home,” said Carol Crews, executive vice president and chief financial officer for Tanner Health. “TCR’s continued support reflects its longstanding commitment to this community, and we encourage other eligible Georgia taxpayers and local businesses to consider how they, too, can make a meaningful investment in healthcare for Haralson County and the surrounding region.”
