Step 1: Add up what your last tournament weekend actually cost.
Travel, entry fees, hotel, food. All of it.
Step 2: Count how many matches your child actually learned something from.
Not matches they won. Matches that taught them something new.
Step 3: Compare those two numbers.
If the second number is small, the weekend was expensive, not developmental.
Step 4: Check whether the draw matched your child's current stage.
A stage 4 player in a national draw is getting reps at losing, not reps at growing.
Step 5: Before your next tournament, ask what stage it actually serves.
Some weekends build your child. Some just cost money and confidence.
Ok, here's how this works.
Old model: enter every tournament you can afford.
New model: enter the tournaments that match the stage.
Same $2,000. Completely different return, and I've seen the difference across 40 years of watching families spend it.
