There is little doubt that 1969 might be considered the pinnacle of American automotive performance. And GM was no slouch when it can to doing their part, as illustrated in this old Popular Hot Rodder magazine article. As most all muscle era hobbyists are aware, Pontiac performance was all part of the entire GM "package" of development and the individual divisions' somewhat sneaky way of getting around the restrictions put on by the big brass. The article also shows some of the "inbreeding" going on between the divisions.

If you are only interested in all things Pontiac, this article may disappoint you as the writers here at Popular Hot Rodder spent the majority of their time discussing Chevrolet. But, you gotta give credit where credit is due. And when reading all they documented about Chevy's small block leading, it makes you wonder why Pontiac (or others) also didn't explore the small block arena (not including the limited 303). Just a thought.

When PMD decided that an overhead cam engine in an American car was "about time" as it was common already throughout Europe, it was quite a remarkable accomplishment. However, the U.S. market just wasn't ready for it. So it is good to know that today such an American experiment is alive and well overseas doing successfully what people like J.Z. Delorean had thought from the beginning. This story is about a '69 Le Mans that began its life in Sweden and today enjoys an easy life of hobby appreciation still in Sweden.

Recently we stumbled on an interesting article concerning the "Real" Last Pontiac. We were surprised to learn that there had been some controversy concerning which car was the "real" last one. We were not surprised, however, to learn that none other than Tim Dye of the Pontiac Museum was able to solve the mystery, and actually come to now possess this famous Pontiac to display in the museum. It is an interesting part of Pontiac's long history. Sadly, it turns out that the last Pontiac wasn't a sexy GXP G8, but on the other hand Pontiac was always noted as being a good car for an everyday driver and family. So, perhaps this little G6 is a good representation of just that.

One of our Pontiac friends, Carlos Pinto, clear over in Portugal likes to design futuristic dream and concept cars- Pontiacs being one of his favorites. But recently he sent us a "What If" Pontiac logo design and setting that got us to thinking about the chain of Pontiac logos through the years- and their why and wherefores. One thing you gotta admit is that PMD did maintain a "look" or identity that served them well. Well, up until the politically correct bunch came along. But that was OK as things needed modernizing anyway.

The year of 1969 is pretty much undisputed as the peak of the muscle car era. So it was a perfect time for one of the premier car magazines to do a comparison of some of "MoTown's" offerings. Such is this report by Car Craft, but it wasn't a shoot-out, rather an in depth breakdown of what made each model the tough on-street contender. Normally we wouldn't go into much detail of what "the other guys" were offering, but since Car Craft did all the work already, why not share it here? It's good to see what Pontiac was up against, and in the eyes of CC, they did pretty well in the stack-up.

Remember the old classic "The Great Pretender?" The Platters sang it in 1959 as a sad love song while later movies turned it into stories of mystery and intrigue. Others (usually referred to as Impostors) have gone through history being many things they really weren't. So, has our little Pontiac tried to pull the wool over our eyes being things it never was? Well, sort of, but not in a bad way... unless you count things like law suits that is. Nonetheless, there have been a number of cracks at turning this 2-seat econo-transporter into the sporty, exotic car most had wished for from the start. And in a sort of strange turn of events, the failures in doing so have actually produced some rather interesting collectible, unique Pontiacs.

You never can tell where interesting Pontiac history is going to show up. In this case, a short report on the 1954 Pontiac Firebird 1 Concept Car appeared in the All American Auto Club (AAAC) from England. It didn't take too much figuring to discover that it was supplied by England's premier Pontiac father and son team of Graham and Simon Webber. Our thanks, always, for their Pontiac support on that side of the world.

Interestingly, the AAAC has run a full Pontiac history series for the past few issues that we shared with them. It was a series that automotive author John Gunnell had furnished us at PontiacRegoistry.com long ago and we shared it to be enjoyed by everyone over yonder in his memory. We miss John's wisdom and friendship but his work will live on forever.

There is so much that has already been said (Ad nauseam) about this less-than-auto-friendly time in our country, and the 1973 GTO is pretty much smack dab in the middle of all of it. It represented the end of an era as well as a styling time that didn't find a whole lot of happy campers. This old article from Hemmings goes into most all of the details. What they missed or kind of glossed over we have enlightened some more about. All that said, we are happy to report that the '73 GTOs have had a sort of resurgence (not that there was ever much of a "surgance") and hobbyists are a forgiving bunch- especially when it comes to having something that not every other person has. So, if you have one, lucky you. If you want something different (and very nice in many peoples' eyes), you might want to start hunting. And if you think GTO lovers were long-faced after the introduction of the '73 GTO... well, check them out after the '74s came out.

Few would consider 1977, or there abouts, as "performance" years for Pontiac. Or anyone else, for that matter. However, for Pontiac lovers there was the short-lived Can Am, and always the Firebird/Trans Ams to consider, though much de-tuned by then. Then again, there were special order police cars that had about as much oomph as one could ever hope for being sold to the long arm of the law... but not necessarily the general public (unless you had some strings to pull). But in short order these cars found their way onto used car lots still packing the heavy-duty and performance goodies. Though sometimes pretty worn out, there were times when the right one might show up. We remember a car lot that peddled the local Pontiac cop cars and often times there were 3-speed (though on the column) Catalinas and once in a while a 2-door sedan detective car. So, if you were looking for a sleeper 4-door sedan, an ex-police car might fit the bill. Perhaps some are still floating around today.

There is never not a good reason for car lovers to come together with their pride and joys. But there are times when those gathers go well beyond the average meet and greet- such as with "Graham's Picnic Meet." While not just for Pontiacs, Graham's large Pontiac collection gave a lot of that brand to be enjoyed. Together with the others who attended, a good amount of money was raised for the fine hospice organization who cared for Graham's wife Hazel. This sort of event is what makes our hobby such a great part of the community- even those clear on the other side of the pond from us here in the U.S. of A.
