A music festival in Montana is a beautiful thing. You get to enjoy the experience outdoors in one of the most celebrated landscapes in the world.

Augusta, Montana, was established in 1883 and is a gateway to the Bob Marshall and the Scapegoat wilderness areas.

The town struggled briefly when portions were destroyed in 1901 by a fire and again in 1914 when a Great Northern Railway branch line was completed to nearby Gilman, instead of to Augusta.

A circa 1910 view of the Hotel Augusta, Manix & Faughn General Merchandise, and other unidentified buildings on Augusta’s Main Street can be seen behind these two boys and a horse. The photo provides a snapshot of life in the town on its journey to recovery in the 1920s when the rail line was extended to the town.

Today the town serves a a recreational hub for individuals looking to camp, fish, hike, and hunt along the Rocky Mountain Front.

Fun fact: The town takes its name from Augusta Hogan, the daughter of homesteader J.D. Hogan, who managed Conrad Kohrs holdings.
