The morning mist at the 75th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance was beginning to lift and just look at the view!

The Ferrari competition and prototype section at Pebble Beach.

We walked past the Ferrari 250 Berlinetta, and then a yellow 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, followed by a 1959 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa!

These were the cars developed for battles with Ford at Le Mans, Daytona and other major World Sportscar Championship events.

They’re among the most beautiful and valuable competition Ferraris ever built.

A smart move by Lewis Hamilton in acquiring this Ferrari F40, powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

Hamilton has embraced a “quality over quantity” philosophy, selling several vehicles from his vast collection to focus on acquiring only the very best. This remarkable example was reportedly discovered in a barn after sitting untouched for more than 30 years. It then underwent an extensive restoration by Ferrari in Maranello, Italy, returning the legendary supercar to its former glory.

The three futuristic cars are the legendary Alfa Romeo B.A.T. 5, B.A.T. 7 and B.A.T. 9, reunited at the 2026 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance for its 75th anniversary.

Pebble Beach actually chose the trio as the stars of its official 2026 Concours poster.

B.A.T. stands for Berlina Aerodinamica Tecnica. Alfa Romeo and Italian coachbuilder Bertone created the three experimental cars in the 1950s to explore just how aerodynamic an automobile could be. All three were designed by the brilliant Franco Scaglione and based on Alfa Romeo 1900 mechanicals.

It was breathtaking to walk past the entire trilogy:

* 1953 Alfa Romeo B.A.T. 5 — the first experiment. Its extremely smooth body, enclosed wheels and dramatic rear fins were designed to dramatically reduce aerodynamic drag.

* 1954 Alfa Romeo B.A.T. 7 — generally considered the most radical of the three. The enormous curved tail fins and almost aircraft-like body pushed Scaglione’s aerodynamic ideas to their extreme.

* 1955 Alfa Romeo B.A.T. 9 — the final evolution. It retained the aerodynamic principles but was deliberately made more recognizable as an Alfa Romeo and more realistic as a road-going automobile.

What’s particularly significant is seeing all three together. Pebble Beach first brought the B.A.T. trio together in 1989, when Nuccio Bertone was able to see his creations reunited. For the 75th anniversary in 2026, Pebble Beach brought them together again.

These aren’t merely unusual concept cars—they’re regarded as landmarks of 20th-century automotive design. Their aerodynamic thinking was decades ahead of normal production cars, and elements of the B.A.T. project later influenced Alfa Romeo designs such as the Giulietta Sprint Speciale. If the 330 LMB looked like a movie prop, the P5 Berlinetta Speciale looked like a spaceship. This experimental mid-engine concept car featured a fully transparent glass canopy roof and a bank of rear grille slats that gave it the appearance of a futuristic cage on wheels.

Pininfarina unveiled the car at the 1968 Geneva Motor Show as a pure study in advanced racing aerodynamics, and it landed like a shock to the public. Enzo Ferrari was famously devoted to front-engine, long-hood grand tourers — the P5 was proof that even he was being pulled toward the radical mid-engine layouts that would come to define nearly every modern supercar, Ferrari's own included. A legend-

On 28 August 2008, Phil Hill died at the age of 81. The 1961 World Champion remains the only Formula 1 champion born in the United States.

Hill entered Grand Prix racing after first building his reputation in sports cars. He made his Formula 1 debut at Reims in 1958 and soon joined Ferrari’s Formula 1 team. His first Grand Prix victory came at Monza in 1960. A year later, driving the Ferrari 156 “Sharknose”, he won in Belgium and Italy and secured the World Championship.

That title was decided on one of the sport’s darkest days. Hill won at Monza after an accident in which his teammate and title rival Wolfgang von Trips and 14 spectators lost their lives. The result made Hill champion by a single point, but the circumstances left no room for celebration. He later served as a pallbearer at von Trips’s funeral.

Hill’s ability reached far beyond Formula 1. With Olivier Gendebien, he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Ferrari in 1958, 1961 and 1962. He also won the 12 Hours of Sebring three times. After racing, his lifelong interest in machinery continued through classic-car restoration.

Thoughtful, technically minded and unusually candid about the risks of his profession, Phil Hill holds a singular place in motor racing history.

A bit of history for you about this 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB "Breadvan". In 2022 it raced at the Le Mans Classic where it slid into the tire barrier. The driver was unharmed. The car was meticulously restored and continues to race.
The “Breadvan” was created after an argument between Enzo Ferrari and a wealthy race team owner named Count Giovanni Volpi, who wanted to buy at 259 GT. Because Volpi had employed ex-Ferrari workers, Enzo would not sell him one. Volpi then hired legendary engineer Giotto Bizzarrini to buy a 250 GT short wheelbase chassis and make it into a “GTO Killer”
The car was 150lbs lighter than a 250 GT. The British racing journalists dubbed it “the Breadvan” 🤔🏁
