❌ some of the parts I make require custom features per the customers request. In order to save having to make a new mold for every hinge combination, I simply move details around the mold using mold inserts. It’s almost impossible to align these inserts using a tape measure because you have no solid reference lines to measure off. Having a template saves a lot of potential aggravation and extra work after making the part.

❌Typically when removing a rotting wood transom the bottom section is mush but the upper section is likely still bonded very well to the hull and it can be a challenge to cut it out. Using a cheap electric chainsaw could be the best option I’ve used for this job. Just cut GRIDS into the plywood cutting down to the glass layer and then using a hand or power chisel makes quick work of this otherwise annoying job.

The nice thing is that the chain won’t like cutting the fiberglass so you don’t have to worry about cutting through the glass by mistake. Also this will destroy the chain pretty quickly so you’ll likely need to sharpen or replace it for larger jobs.

Look back at livewell tub mold built using 3/4” MDF cut and stacked, epoxy glued together, sealed with epoxy, faired out using Alexseal 202 lightweight epoxy putty, PPG high build fast cure epoxy primer and then topcoated with a gloss Polysiloxane bright red…sanded and polished.

This mold building technique has yielded over 6 part cycles with only minimal damage to the wood mold which is very difficult to do with a part of this size to not have the entire wood stack break off the mold base when releasing the part.

Stopped over to drop off a bunch of Alexseal Paints & Primers to Cody Marine Services 360 who is starting a roller application hull side and partial topside refinish on this Classic Bertram. There’s alot of cost savings that comes along with doing a roller application due to less prep and masking and additionally a job of this size typically requires renting the paint barn or transporting the boat to a different location for spraying.

If you’re interested in getting something like this done reach out to me and I can give you more details.

Keep in mind that there’s still a massive amount of labor involved even with a roller job but when compared to spraying, it’s typically less expensive. Each boat is different and cost vary based on the age and condition of the boat.

I have to put fiberglass parts on hold for a bit or best case extend lead times due to very limited/slow production. I’m doing what I can to keep up with orders I have deposits on but it’s simply going to take longer than what I probably originally quoted.
