When a minor child will be spending an extended period of time with someone other than their parent or legal guardian, a Provisional Custody by Mandate can help put the proper authority in place.
This Louisiana instrument allows a parent to authorize another person to provide for the care, custody and control of their minor child. The custodian can usually be given authority to enroll the child in school, authorize medical care and handle other needs related to the child’s well-being.
The authority can be granted for up to one year and is different from full legal custody or adoption.
