TopCops Driving School Teaching Colorado teens how to drive safely. 🚘 👮‍♀️👋

Every classroom and driving instructor at TopCops is an active or retired police officer, first responder, or police-trained and certified instructor. We’ve seen too many accidents involving young drivers, and we’re committed to teaching your teen how to drive safely and the importance of doing so. Our driver education program for teens covers all the rules and regulations of driving and prepares

students for the permit test through interactive lectures, discussions, games, and activities. In addition, your teen will learn how to drive through a tire blowout, how to change a tire, what to do when pulled over, and more! Before the session starts, there will be a short parent orientation with information on how to be a home driving instructor for your teen.

Most crashes don’t happen because teens don’t know the rules — they happen because of split-second decisions.

Distraction, speeding, and inattention can turn a normal drive into a dangerous situation in seconds.

The safest drivers aren’t just the ones who know the rules — they’re the ones who stay focused and think ahead.

With warmer weather, more people are out walking, biking, and crossing streets especially in neighborhoods and near parks.

Drivers should:
✔ Slow down in residential areas
✔ Watch for sudden movement (kids, pets, bikes)
✔ Always yield to pedestrians

Many of these situations happen quickly, awareness is key.

🚗 Driving Myth

Myth: “Short trips are safer.”

Reality: Most crashes happen close to home, on familiar roads where drivers tend to let their guard down.

Comfort can lead to distraction, missed signs, or slower reaction times.

💡 Safe driving habits matter every time you get behind the wheel — no matter how short the trip.

👨‍👩‍👧 Parent Reality

Teaching your teen to drive is one of the most stressful parenting milestones.

You’re not just teaching them how to steer or park — you’re helping them make decisions in real-time situations where safety matters.

That first solo drive? It’s a mix of pride and nerves.

That’s why structured driver education and professional instruction can make a huge difference — for both teens and parents.

We’re here to support families every step of the way — from the classroom to behind the wheel and the driving test.

The answer is... 🥁🥁🥁

✅ Correct Answer: C

Backing vehicles may not see you — especially in residential areas. Defensive drivers anticipate movement and slow down early to stay in control.

🚓 From the Instructor’s Seat

“One of the most common mistakes new drivers make? Following too closely.”

Sgt. Cabot sees this daily — and it’s one of the leading causes of rear-end crashes. Many new drivers underestimate how much space they actually need to react.

At higher speeds, even a 1–2 second delay can make the difference between stopping safely and a collision.

💡 Aim for at least a 3-second following distance — and more in traffic or poor weather.

Our Behind-the-Wheel lessons help permitted students practice a safe following distance and real-world driving experience.

🚦 Heads up, Colorado drivers!

The Express Lanes Safety and Toll Enforcement Program (STEP) is launching soon from Berthoud to Fort Collins, and it’s important to know when it’s safe (and legal) to enter or exit.

✔ Dashed lines = you can enter/exit
✔ Dashed + solid line = only cross if the dashed line is on your side
❌ Solid line on your side = do NOT cross

Crossing solid lines isn’t just unsafe — it can result in a $75 civil penalty.

Learn the rules, drive with confidence, and keep our roads safer for everyone.

🚓 Update: Colorado Driver Education Law Timeline Change

If you’ve seen us sharing information about the new driver education law — here’s the latest:

The State has officially moved the effective date to January 1, 2027 (previously April 1, 2026).

This update gives parents and teens additional time to get up to speed with the new requirements, and we’re committed to keeping our families informed with the most current information available.

Current requirements remain the same for now.

For families with teens/young adults ages 16–21 who are planning to get licensed, this may be a good time to start the permit process under the current requirements.

Have questions about what this means for your teen? We’re here to help!

When your teen starts driving, begin practicing in low-stress environments.

Start with:
✔ Empty parking lots
✔ Quiet neighborhood streets
✔ Daytime driving in clear weather

Then gradually build up to more challenging situations like night driving, traffic, and highway merging.

Confidence grows with experience — and the safest drivers learn step by step.

Some of the most common driving challenges aren’t what teens expect:

• Parking lots are where many minor crashes happen
• Rain can be more dangerous than snow
• Left turns cause more crashes than right turns
• Distractions inside the car are just as risky as those outside

Learning to drive is about more than the basics — it’s about recognizing hazards before they become problems.

That’s exactly what professional driver training helps students learn.

Our Behind-the-Wheel driving lessons give student drivers the opportunity to practice these real-world situations with experienced instructors who help build safe habits from day one.
