Today marks the beginning of black history month. I am at my business, Twin Motors, today reflecting on Black heroes. I thank them for their courage and strength – they made the world what it is now for me and for my children and for all Americans. A few heroes stood out for me today: Jackie Robinson, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Colin Powell, Aretha Franklin, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., President Barack Obama, and General Toussaint Louverture.
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke in his “I Have a Dream” speech:
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
His dream has not yet come fully true, but the day comes closer.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
His dream makes it possible for me to dream for my two children, and for all of us to dream for ourselves and our children.
Along the way there have been the nightmares of atrocities: slavery, lynching, beating, being 3/5 of a human. Enough ! Enough ! Our freedom and all freedom is a precious gift. I was raised in Haiti. General Toussaint Louverture led that country to freedom and then was taken captive to a foreign prison. He spoke French and Kreyol, but is quoted in English, reflecting the inspiration of Thomas Jefferson:
It is easy to cut down the tree of liberty, but not so easy to restore it to life.
I have been blessed to be an American during the presidency of Barack Obama, who spoke on Blacks and all Americans as he ran for the presidency:
One task - to continue the long march of those who came before us, a march for a more just, more equal, more free, more caring, and more prosperous America.
How can all of us celebrate this month and those special times and thoughts? One way is by being an ally any way you can. Speak up when you see the wrong. Support black-owned business like my Twin Motors. Ask questions rather than making judgements. Talk about the issues that have hurt us for centuries. Help us establish an equitable society and end the racism and privilege that regard Blacks as different and less
Music plays a big role in all lives. Great songs like “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “We Shall Overcome “ are not pollical anthems, but the tastes of the joy of freedom we all thirst for. In this Black history month, in the middle of a pandemic, I invite you to celebrate with us by being part of the reflection of a new era drawing the best of our past into a better future for us all.
