Jobs like this are a perfect representation of the value in an inspection. Things like this gudgeon bearing or an axle bearing can be caught by physically checking them and minimize or hopefully eliminate down time when you need your machine. I didn’t have any plans of using my splitting stand again so soon but you just never know what you’ll find on an inspection.

Working for a dealer I really took for granted how often you need a special service tool. Every time I find a need for one I don’t have I try my best to get it. Often times resulting in the cost of my labor being a wash for the cost of the tool knowing I’ll likely use it again in the future. Stands to split these 4wd tractors are in the the $10,000 to $15,000 range depending where you get them. I took a stab at building my own last week and it turned out great. New hinge pins and bushings are in and this 9520 will be ready to get back to work in the spring.

I’ve been finding quite a few 4wd tractors with u joints worn in like this. If you have one with a couple thousand plus hours that the u joints are still green this might be something to consider replacing. I do have some room for winter inspections and/or repairs. Something a little different than my usual combines and tractors yesterday. This gmc truck with a duramax had a leaking exhaust manifold that ended up melting all the injector wiring on the driver side. Ended up putting in one helicoil, replacing the manifold and up pipe, and repairing the wiring harness.
