Here are a couple of friendly tips before this storm comes in.
• Consider leaving vehicles unlocked. Ice can lock door handles solid, and key fobs don’t always work in extreme cold.
• Lift your windshield wipers off the glass and put a folded up towel or cardboard or something under them. If they freeze to the windshield and you turn them on, you’ll burn the motor or tear the blades. Do not stand them up and leave them, the wind can blow them back down causing them to crack or shadder your frozen windshield.
• Don’t set the parking brake if your vehicle is going to sit. Moisture can freeze in the cables and lock your rear brakes up.
• Turn your heat to medium, not max, if you lose power and are using alternative heat. Slower, steady heat helps prevent condensation and ice buildup inside.
• Keep a small shovel, traction (kitty litter or sand), and gloves in your vehicle even if you don’t plan to drive. Plans change fast in bad weather. And always keep a change of warm clothes, a coat and a blanket in your car along with some bottles of water and some snacks in case you're stuck in your car over night.
• If trees are icing up, park away from them. Ice-loaded limbs snap without warning.
•Make sure to fill your car up with gas before the storm and check your antifreeze.
•Its a really good idea to start your car and let it run for about 30 minutes at least once a day especially if you have a weak battery. Extreme cold will drain a battery fast.
•Back into your parking spot or garage because its easier to control a car on ice going forward instead of backwards. Alot of people dont even make it out of their driveways.
We hope these tips help. Everyone stay safe and stay warm. And dont forget about your animals and check elderly neighbors.
