Here, over the last couple of weeks, I have found myself discussing the actual fuel-saving benefits of a hybrid vs. a gas-powered vehicle.

There appears to be a misconception about how much these vehicles will save you depending on your driving habits.

Many people believe that getting a hybrid, no matter what, is going to save them tons of money. Here's the truth.

Fuel efficiency is measured in miles per gallon (MPG), and there are three figures to consider: city, highway, and combined.

The biggest savings for a hybrid owner come from city driving. We're talking 15+ MPG over a comparable gas-powered vehicle. If 70% or more of your daily driving is stop and go city traffic, spending a bit more on a hybrid will likely earn you back the additional cost and then some over the life of the vehicle.

However, the flip side isn't nearly as impressive. Highway driving typically only nets you an improvement of about 4 to 5 MPG, which severely limits your annual fuel savings.

A good rule of thumb, if you're considering a hybrid based on fuel efficiency alone, is to look at the ratio of city to highway driving in your daily commute.

If 70% or more of your driving is on the highway, you'd most likely be fine with a gas-powered vehicle and save a couple thousand dollars on the purchase price. If the opposite is true, however, you could see considerable savings by spending a bit more upfront on a hybrid.

Ultimately, there are many factors people consider when comparing the two. Hopefully, this look at one aspect helps you make a more informed decision!
