The Fair started in 1859 and has only been cancelled 6 times:
1 & 2. In 1861 and 1862 due to the Civil War and the U.S.-Dakota War
3. In 1893 because of scheduling conflicts with the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago
4. In 1945 due to war-time fuel shortages
5. In 1946 due to a polio epidemic
6. and more recently, in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic
