Soul Link Yoga classes happen here at The Bodyworks Studio Thursdays from 6-7pm! Chairs, mats, & props available in studio for your use.
Yoga was never meant to be "just" movement. Krishmamurti reminds us that you can do yoga exercises for the rest of your life and still never touch true spiritual insight.
Asana (the poses) was never the whole of, or heart, of Yoga.
Asana was originally included for one purpose - to prepare the body so it's steady enough to be comfortable enough to sit in stillness for the deeper practices of breathwork, mantra, meditation.
A flexible & steady body supports a flexible & steady mind. The body stops being a distraction when it comes time to sit for meditation if you can comfortably sit and not be distracted by the body - by aching hips, by a sore back, what have you. And from that steadiness, THEN the deeper aspect of yoga become possible. Breathwork, mantra, concentration, meditation, and ultimately awakening.
In the 8 limbs of yoga, of which asana is only one, Asana is simply a step on a much larger path. True Yoga is not about simply going through the motions of the poses, or perfecting a shape. It's a doorway to help us enter there inner practices where true insight actually arises.
This is why in Kundalini yoga, in my classes, our meditation happens at the end of class. After we have moved our bodies, after we have awakened our energies, we then are ready to sit for our mantra meditation, chanting ideally for 5 minutes or more if we have it. We are ready to lay in stillness and not be uncomfortable or fidgety for our Naad yoga (yoga of sacred sound) sound bath in savasana which is 10-15 minutes. My classes are not about flowing from pose to pose to pose.
When we remember this, our practice shifts. The postures and movement become the preparation, not a performance.
The real yoga begins in the stillness after each movement, and in the stillness after all movement is over.
