Fun project. Briddell cleaver that a gentleman recently brought me, having belonged originally to his grandfather, who was an avid outdoorsman and butcher in Montana many decades ago. He'd already had it glass beaded when he brought it to me (first picture).

My process:

Extensive polish on 2x36 using scotchbrite brown and grey belts, along with 180g scotchbright wheel. Additional polish with a denim wheel and blue compound. Finishing polish was a mild automotive compound. Blade is not stainless, so finished with a light coating of Tsubaki oil (a light mineral oil).

Re-profiling and bevel completed on 2x36 using a Cubitron P50, and final edge on Trizact A30. Additional assistance in scratch pattern removal with the scotchbrite 180 wheel prior to A30. Final burr removal on hard felt wheel with green compound, and low speed leather strop on the 2x36 (fuzzy side, green compound, Curry Custom Cutlery .1 micron diamond emulsion).

Handle: hand sanding at 120g, soaked in pure tung oil for 16 hours. After drying, hand sanded at 220 and 320. Sealed with Rennaissance preservation wax.

Customer was super happy!

If your blade is starting to look like the one on the top, I can fix this for you. This is often a result of sharpening with "pull-through" type sharpeners and I can restore a proper profile in most cases. There may be scenarios where this is not appropriate however, so feel free to ask about yours if you're unsure!
