Heater cores are just tiny little radiators that fit behind the dash. They are stuffed into the HVAC unit. When they fail it can be costly. The best thing you can do to be preventative is maintain your cooling system. Most folks over look the cooling system. Some manufactures recommend every two years. Be sure to do your research on your vehicle for maintenance recommendations if you are maintaining your vehicle yourself.
