From Saturday’s accident at the finish line, to the spontaneous fundraisers, to the Auction for Duke, this weekend reminded me again why this nostalgia drag racing community means so much to me.
There are always going to be a few people who don’t quite get what The Rumble is about. But when I look around Thunder Valley during Rumble weekend, I see the kind of people I genuinely enjoy being around and am proud to call friends.
Watching people step up Saturday when a racer needed help, and then seeing so many of you donate items, open your wallets, bid at the auction and support Duke and his family—it meant a lot to me personally. Nobody had to be asked twice. People just stepped up because that’s what this group does.
Together, we raised $4,200 at the Auction for Duke, plus more than $500 in additional donations, including Dan Collins’ photo-op fundraiser for the Talbot family. That’s nearly $5,000 raised simply because a bunch of people decided to help a family that is part of our community. I’m incredibly grateful to every person who had a part in that.
From our volunteer auctioneer to the people who donated, bid, helped behind the scenes, raced, showed a car, worked the event or simply came through the gate and supported what we’re trying to do—thank you. I mean that sincerely.
I spend a lot of time throughout the year working on The Rumble, and weekends like this remind me why I keep doing it. It isn’t just about old cars and nostalgia drag racing. It’s about the people those cars bring together.
For one weekend every year, Thunder Valley is filled with people I’m genuinely proud to call my friends.
Thank you for making The Rumble something that means as much to me personally as I hope it does to all of you.
We’ll see you next September.
