I have for years had people to ask , "Can my engine tune burn up my trans " While yes I knew it can affect because I had little experience with OBD2 and the newer OS , I did not realize to what extent. With the earlier GM1 My experience was little to no effect. But since I swapped the impala to the torquehead and the 0411 with the 2003 OS simple changes like fueling , timing can have pretty dramatic effects, In fact my first drive with the stock tune for the 2003 tahoe the car ran really bad and the trans felt and lived up to the name 4LSLIPPY-E so bad I went less than a block , puled it to manual one to avoid damage and headed right back home,
So in summation I would now have to answer yes a BAD TUNE can mess up your trans as it seems everything is based around the calculated torque based on fuel-spark-timing- TPS - map - maf -02 so yes bad sensors , miss settings in tune can indeed kill the trans and in short order.
So I question I get at times "Is it ok to drive my untuned car with major changes to engine-induction- stall- rear ratio and more to my tuner?" My answer would be- Do so at your own risk as the risk is most certainly there depending on the extent of the modification changes and if you take off and the trans feel WRONG stop and call AAA get it towed there. Honestly also for me at least . I think everyone who has a performance car should invest in AAA . Its been a life save for me, 2X when opti spark failed 125 miles from home , MY COST FOR THE TOW $0 . Then another when fuel pump died short tow but cost $0 dollars, 2X dead batter when I had a drain I had not figured out called even one in the massive pouring rain and right out for a jump no problem cost nothing. Flat tire on my old ES**RT no spare! towed home on a snowy windy freezing day again cost $0 . The 14 dollars a month is worth every dime for the peace of mind.
