Our new member to the Team Fog Racing team- my son who just got his SCCA certification last weekend in Thunderhill Raceway. It had challenging conditions- cold and sometimes rainy but he was fastest in Spec Miatas and his very first time driving those cars.

What started out as a questionable day in SF turned out to be glorious. Fun stuff in the air. Have to say the Blue Angels were good as always but totally outclassed by the F22 and F35B demos- crickey they were good.

It was a long weekend racing at the 2024 CSRG Charity Challenge. Three days of racing and the weekend went really well.

I brought out my Alfa GTA which i always a pleasure and did great with it even though I made a tactical error doing qualifying with ancient tires. The thrill of the weekend was three days of running my 1973 Brabham BT-40 F2/Atlantic car which I haven't driven for two years, Qualified well and did great in the races. Thanks to Mike Meindorfer and Chris Clark who supported me through the weekend.

The highlight of the weekend was having my daughter and her husband bring my 9 month year old grandson to the track and having him experience his first race weekend. It was a little hard to tell but I think he enjoyed the experience. It's funny- I took similar pics of my son in my cars when he was 9 months old.

Somehow finished last weeks Rolex Monterey Motorsports ReUnion in a good way after a few gremlins showed up in the Alfa. Did well in the 1 hour Enduro driving the entire race by myself and finished top ten in the final race which was a miracle as I lost second gear with two laps to go- and a non-existent charging system.

Photo of Charles Test and I along with Dan Farmer who helped me in the Enduro fueling the Alfa during the mandatory pit stop. Charles and I met 50 years ago in Art School in Minneapolis and friends ever since.

Not a bad weekend at all.

I didn't grow up watching, thinking or caring about the Indy 500. It wasn't interesting to me, even though I remember famous names and historic events that happened especially as a little kid- Jim Clark, Johnny Rutherford, Danny Ongais, many others.

I wanted to be Giacomo Agostini or Mike Hailwood, I admired Barry Sheen and others that could lean their machines over so perilously close to losing the tires grip and still rotate the bike over to attack the next corner... but I was never ever that good.

When I started driving racing cars at the tender age of 40 I still had no interest in the ovals. Nascar did nothing for me and Indy Cars seemed a second rate circus to Formula One. And then I was convinced to come to Indy.

The SVRA has an event every year at the Indianapolis Motor Sports facility. It's a big event- I'm not sure how many cars were entered but the paddock was completely filled. I brought out my 1965 Brabham BT-14 F2 car (or Formula B as it's called here) and went out to learn the circuit for the very first time. For a variety of reasons I had to retire the car and faced yet another disappointing race weekend.

Step into the situation is the friend who convinced me to come to Indy in the first place- Charles Test of the Ragtime Racers who generously offered me his 1912 Packard to take the car out with the whole group and do the classic Indy Oval.

It's difficult to explain the sensation and the feeling of going around the Indy 500 Oval in a car that likely did that in it's day. Trying to replicate how drivers took each corner- cutting the grass at every apex and washing the car out as close to the wall as you could- but in an ancient dinosaur that can barely turn 80MPH. But then rounding turn 4 and coming down the main straight surrounded by a canyon of grandstands- it didn't take much imagination thinking of what it must be like when the stands are packed with hundreds of thousands of spectators.

I confess it was almost a religious experience.

Brought my '65 Brabham down to Visalia yesterday so Blain Motorsports Foundation can bring it to Indy and Road America. Long tow and in 105 degree heat (and a really long day round trip) but made it with no issues.

I have rented a house in Elkhard Lake Wisconsin for the Road America event- if anyone is looking for a place to stay from Thursday July 11th through Monday July 15th let me know- inexpensive, wonderful and comfortable house 10 Minutes away from the track. Contact me with a dm here.

I couldn't make the race at Laguna this weekend due to a failed water pump on my Volks Van- 250K miles of unbelievable reliability so I guess these things happen. Just glad my son and I didn't break down in 100 degree heat on 101 South in horrible Friday traffic towing an expensive race car.

So I flew my yellow peril instead!

Good weekend at Sonoma- paddock saw three entries from our team- Charles Test driving the Alfa Giulietta, me driving the Alfa GTA and the Brabham BT-14. Chuck Raggio brought his Anson Super-V and placed well. It was a good weekend for the most part although my Brabham- while qualifying 3rd in it's race had engine issues and I had to retire it on the first lap... not sure what the issue is but more teething problems which don't make me happy.

The GTA did great- qualifies in 6th Overall and placed the same in all the races. Got to a lap time of 2:00 which considering the tires were old was really good. The pic (Courtesy Dennis Gray- photographer supreme) caught the train of Alfas looking choreographed coming up the hill into turn 2. Note the right front wheel lifting with air showing underneath.

Overall a pretty good weekend...

I never posted any pics from the 2022 Austin F1 Support Race- it was quite the experience, First time driving COTA and there was a very steep learning curve. Did fine- was the slowest of the fast guys or the fastest of the slow guys so right in the middle- would do it again in a second....
