Taming the Lava Fields: Why McKenzie Pass (OR-242) Is Central Oregon’s Ultimate Driver’s Road,

If you live in Central Oregon and appreciate true mechanical performance, world-class driving roads don't require an all-day road trip. Located just a short, scenic drive right outside of Sisters, Oregon, McKenzie Pass Highway (OR-242) is sitting right in our own backyard.

Carving through tight switchbacks, climbing past dense alpine pines, and emerging into a surreal, 65-square-mile sea of black volcanic basalt, it is easily one of the most cinematic ribbons of asphalt in the Pacific Northwest. We recently took our silver 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 up to the summit at dusk—and it delivered everything a real driving enthusiast could ask for.

1. 650 Supercharged Horsepower Meets the High Cascades
Under the vented carbon-fiber hood insert of this 2017 ZL1 sits a supercharged 6.2L LT4 V8 engine producing a massive 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque.

Instantaneous Boost: The supercharger delivers immediate throttle response, pulling hard up steep mountain grades without breaking a sweat.

Track-Tuned Dynamics: McKenzie Highway isn't just about straight-line muscle; it demands sharp handling. With GM’s Magnetic Ride Control, massive 6-piston front Brembo brakes, and a dialed-in chassis, the ZL1 stays flat, planted, and composed through rapid elevation shifts and tight hairpins.

2. 65 Square Miles of Volcanic Drama
Reaching the 5,325-foot summit feels like parking on another planet. Surrounding the highway is an expansive field of jagged volcanic rock formed thousands of years ago by eruptions from Belknap Crater.

The Dee Wright Observatory: Constructed entirely out of local basalt by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1935, this stone fortress offers panoramic views across the High Cascades.

The 1937 Bronze Compass Peakfinder: Step onto the observatory's viewing deck, and you'll find the historic brass compass cast by Portland's Benson Polytechnic School in 1937, pointing toward North Sister, Middle Sister, Mt. Washington, and Mt. Jefferson.

3. A Historic Oregon Crossing
Long before modern supercharged muscle cars carved these apexes, the pass served as an ancient trail used by Indigenous peoples. In 1862, Felix Scott Jr. guided cattle and supply wagons across the rough terrain toward Idaho mining camps. By 1872, it became a functioning toll road before evolving into the state scenic highway we get to enjoy today.

Find the Right Platform for Your High Desert Adventures
Having world-class roads like Highway 242 right here in Central Oregon is a constant reminder of why having the right vehicle matters. Whether you're looking for a supercharged coupe to carve mountain passes, a capable 4x4 for off-grid forest service trails, or a dependable daily driver, the Pacific Northwest was built to be explored.

Mini Road Trip Lore: What Makes "Mile Marker 0" So Legendary? 📍🌴

We’re a long way from the high desert of Central Oregon, but we were truly blessed to make this iconic drive all the way down the Florida Keys. If you love spending time behind the wheel, finally pulling up and standing at this exact sign at the corner of Whitehead and Fleming Streets in Key West is an unforgettable, bucket-list moment.

Taking in the turquoise water, crossing bridge after bridge, and experiencing the drive firsthand gave us a whole new appreciation for why Mile Marker 0 holds such a legendary place in American road trip culture:

The Longest North-South Highway: This sign marks the official southern terminus of U.S. Route 1. From this exact post, US-1 stretches 2,369 miles all the way to Fort Kent, Maine at the Canadian border—passing through 14 states and some of the most historic cities along the entire eastern seaboard.

The Overseas Highway: The final 113-mile stretch—known as the Overseas Highway—connects mainland Florida to Key West across 42 islands and dozens of bridges (including the famous Seven Mile Bridge). Driving it feels almost surreal, with over 15% of the route suspended right over the open Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

Born from a Historic Railroad: Before it was an asphalt highway, this route was Henry Flagler's famous Over-Sea Railroad. After the historic 1935 Labor Day hurricane damaged parts of the rail line, the state repurposed the incredible foundations and bridges into the highway we get to enjoy today.

Making this journey was a great reminder of why we do what we do. Whether you're heading up the McKenzie Pass in Oregon, cruising Highway 101 along the Pacific coast, or traveling all the way across the country until the pavement literally runs out in Key West, the open road is what driving is all about.

We feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced this stretch of pavement firsthand. What is the single most memorable road trip you’ve ever been blessed to take? Drop your favorite drives in the comments! 👇
