Have you heard of Eliza (Lyda) Burton Conley? Born in Kansas City in 1868, Lyda was the first female and Native American admitted to the Kansas Bar Association and the first Native American to argue a case before the Supreme Court (and the third female), all before women even had the right to vote in the United States. While Lyda lost her Supreme Court battle to protect a burial site of the Wyandot Nation from sale, her case caught the attention of a local Kansas senator who was one-eighth Kaw that passed an act protecting Native American burial grounds permanently.
