Getting an exact color match on a fiberglass repair or repaint is one of the more technical parts of the job, and it's where a lot of DIY attempts fall short.

Marine gelcoat fades and shifts over time, which means matching to the original manufacturer color often isn't enough. A good color match accounts for how the surrounding surface has aged, not just what the color was when it was new. Whether you're repairing a section after damage or refinishing the whole hull, the goal is a finish that reads as one consistent color across the entire surface.

If you need an exact match or want help finding the right color combination for a custom finish, that's exactly what we do.

This little boat came in with some surface wear and scuffs along the hull that needed attention before the season gets going.

Older fiberglass boats like this one often show their age in the gelcoat first. Scratches, staining, and dull spots are common, but they're also fixable. A proper repair and refinish can bring the surface back and protect the structure underneath for years of use ahead.

Most people think about fiberglass damage in terms of impacts, but UV exposure is just as much of a threat, especially for boats and RVs that spend a lot of time outside.

Over time, the sun breaks down the gelcoat that protects the fiberglass underneath. You'll start to see it as fading, chalking, or a dull oxidized surface. What looks like a cosmetic issue can actually leave the laminate vulnerable to moisture and cracking if it goes unaddressed long enough. By the time it's visibly bad, some of the damage has already progressed below the surface.

Keeping up with gelcoat maintenance and addressing early signs of UV damage is a lot easier than repairing what happens when it's ignored.

Before you put your boat back in the water this spring, here are a few things worth checking on the fiberglass.

Look for hairline cracks around high-stress areas like the hull, transom, and anywhere hardware is mounted. These can start small but allow water in over time, which leads to bigger structural issues down the road.

Check for soft spots by pressing gently along the hull. If an area flexes more than it should, that can be a sign of delamination or water damage beneath the surface.
Pay attention to any discoloration or bubbling in the gelcoat. That kind of surface change often means moisture has already found its way in.

If you find something that needs attention, getting it repaired before the season starts is always the better call. Visit our website to request an estimate.

Fiberglass repairs take more than just materials, they take experience. Knowing how to assess the damage, rebuild it properly, and match the finish is what makes the difference between a quick fix and a repair that actually lasts. Just as important is keeping you informed along the way, so you know what to expect from start to finish.
