LEVAN MACHINE & TRUCK EQUIPMENT THUNDER ON THE HILL PRESENTED BY ALPINE BUILDING SUPPLY DELIVER A THRILLER TUESDAY NIGHT AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY………..
KYLE CUMMINS SURVIVES BRIGGS DANNER’S CHALLENGE TO POCKET $6,000 EASTERN STORM OPENER, JEFF STRUNK CHARGES TO 18TH CAREER MODIFIED WIN FOR $3,000 PAYDAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA (June 16, 2026) – Princeton, Indiana’s Kyle Cummins survived heavy lapped traffic, multiple restarts and a furious late-race challenge from Briggs Danner to score the $6,000 Jesse Hockett Classic victory in Tuesday night's AMSOIL USAC Eastern Storm opener at Grandview Speedway. And it was all Jeff Strunk stormed from the 14th starting position to steal the NASCAR 358 Modified feature at the Levan Machine & Truck Equipment Thunder on the Hill Racing Series event presented by Alpine Building Supply.
There was quite a buzz at this event that started with a bustling crowd strolling through the numerous USAC driver merchandise row. At the same time, local country artist Billy McGowan performed on merchandise row and later sang the National Anthem, all courtesy of Alpine Building Supply. A pre-race driver Meet & Greet with the fans took place at the main entrance and approximately seventy-five race fans were invited to watch USAC Sprint and Modified warm-ups from inside turn four. All this, then the racing action stole the show. Twenty-five USAC Sprints and thirty-nine Modifieds took part in the racing program.
" This is one of the places I really struggle," Cummins said after the race. "Briggs came through and got by, but, good luck kind of went our way when we got it back because of the yellow.”
Starting from the pole, Cummins raced to the early lead over C.J. Leary and quickly established himself as the driver to beat in the 40-lap USAC National Sprint Car feature. While Cummins maintained the top spot, the battle behind him intensified as Jake Swanson, Danner and Leary traded positions in a fierce fight for the podium.
Lapped traffic began to play a major role just past the halfway point. Danner, who had worked his way from fourth to third on lap 15 before taking second from Leary one lap later, steadily reeled in the leader as Cummins navigated slower cars.
The race's pivotal moment appeared to come on lap 18 when Danner executed a bold outside move and briefly took the lead from Cummins. Before the pass could officially count, however, a caution flag for Brendon Hires erased the move and returned Cummins to the point for the restart.
Danner refused to go away.
Following another caution on lap 22 when Ronald Helmick stopped on the frontstretch, Cummins again controlled the restart, but Danner repeatedly attacked the high side of the speedway, riding the cushion and searching for any opening he could find. Despite several charges, he could never quite draw close enough to mount a clean challenge for the lead.
As the laps wound down, heavy lapped traffic once again tightened the battle. Danner closed to within a few car lengths with five laps remaining and was directly on Cummins' rear bumper by lap 37.
The crowd came to its feet on lap 38 when Danner launched one final slider entering turn four. The two drivers made contact as Danner attempted the pass, sending Danner spinning and bringing out the caution flag while Cummins maintained control of the race.
That set up a Green-White-Checkered finish, but Cummins was flawless on the restart, pulling away to secure his fifth USAC National Sprint Car victory of the season and the 35th win of his career.
Jake Swanson crossed the line second, followed by Brady Bacon, C.J. Leary, and Christian Bruno completing the top five.
Danner set the fastest Qualifying lap with a time of 13.797 while Heat races were won by Cale C***s, Hayden Reinbold and Chase Stockon.
In the accompanying NASCAR 358 Modified feature, Rick Laubach appeared headed for victory after leading the opening 26 laps, but Jeff Strunk had other plans.
Laubach grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag and quickly established himself as the driver to beat in the 30-lap contest. Tim Buckwalter worked his way into second on lap eight and remained among the frontrunners through a series of caution periods that slowed the pace.
Bobby Trapper Jr. also charged into the top five during the opening half of the race while Strunk steadily worked his way forward from the seventh row.
Following a lap-15 caution, Laubach again powered away on the restart while Craig Whitmoyer moved into second. Strunk continued his advance, taking over the runner-up position on lap 18 and beginning his pursuit of the leader.
As the laps wound down, Strunk methodically chipped away at Laubach's advantage before making the winning move on lap 27, driving underneath the longtime Grandview standout to seize control of the race.
Once in front, Strunk pulled away over the final circuits to score the victory.
Laubach settled for second after leading the majority of the event, followed by Whitmoyer, Brett Kressley and Logan Watt.
Qualifying Heat races were won by Jax Yohn, Bobby Trapper Jr., Jesse Hirthler and Mike Gular. Consolations events were won by Dan Bouc and Ryan Watt.
The Levan Machine & Truck Equipment Thunder on the Hill Racing Series returns to Grandview Speedway on Tuesday, June 30, with a Pennsylvania Sprint Car Speedweek doubleheader featuring the 410 Sprint Cars racing for a $10,000 winner's share alongside the NASCAR 358 Modifieds.
