🚨 PARENTS, GREAT NEWS — THERE IS STILL DRIVER’S ED GRANT MONEY AVAILABLE 🚨

If you thought you missed it, you didn’t. There are still spots available through the Wisconsin DMV Driver Education Grant, but they will not last long.

💡 WHAT THIS GRANT IS
The Wisconsin DMV Driver Education Grant was created to help families cover the cost of Driver’s Ed so teens can receive proper training instead of skipping it due to cost.

For families who qualify, the grant can cover:
✔ 30 hours of classroom instruction
✔ 6 hours behind the wheel
✔ 6 hours of observation

The DMV pays the driving school directly. This is not a reimbursement program.

👀 WHO IS ELIGIBLE
It really is this simple:
✔ Wisconsin resident
✔ Age 14½ to 19
✔ Eligible for free or reduced lunch
✔ Has not previously held a driver license

If your teen qualifies for free or reduced lunch, there is a very good chance they qualify for this program.

⚠️ IMPORTANT TO KNOW
This grant is not retroactive.
If you have already paid for Driver’s Ed, the grant will not reimburse you.

However:
If you only paid for part of the program, such as classroom only, you may still be able to use the grant for behind the wheel.

The grant opened recently and is already filling up quickly.

The last time it opened, funds were gone in just a few days.

🚨 PARENTS, HERE IS WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DRIVER’S ED IN WISCONSIN 🚨

If you have a teen getting close to driving, you’ve probably realized something,
This process can feel overwhelming.

Between school, sports, work schedules, and everything else going on, figuring out Driver’s Ed is just one more thing on your plate.

Take a breath, we’ve got you.

🧠 WHEN SHOULD MY TEEN START DRIVER’S ED?

This is one of the most misunderstood parts of the entire process.

Your teen can complete the classroom portion of Driver’s Ed before their 15th birthday, which is a huge advantage for busy families.

That means they can be fully prepared and ready to go to the DMV on their 15th birthday to get their instruction permit.

They cannot get their permit before turning 15, but they can be ready on day one.

There is no specific Wisconsin law that sets a strict minimum age for starting classroom instruction.

However, timing still matters. Starting too early can create gaps that may require additional instruction later.

The Wisconsin DMV Grant begins eligibility at age 14½, and some driving schools may have their own starting guidelines, which is where a lot of the confusion comes from.

The key is planning the timing the right way so you are not scrambling later.

📘 WHAT YOUR TEEN NEEDS TO DO

✔ Enroll in a certified Driver’s Ed program
✔ Pass the knowledge test and road signs test
✔ Be at least 15 years old to obtain an Instruction Permit
✔ Complete 30 hours classroom, 6 hours behind the wheel, and 6 hours observation
✔ Practice 50 hours with a parent, including 10 hours at night
✔ Hold the permit for at least 6 months
✔ Be at least 16 years old
✔ Pass the road test

🚦 WHAT IS GDL?

For the first 9 months after licensing, there are passenger limits, late night driving restrictions, and stricter penalties for violations.

These rules are designed to protect new drivers while they gain experience, and give parents a little peace of mind.

💡 WHAT ABOUT THE DMV GRANT?

The Wisconsin DMV offers a Driver Education Grant for qualifying families based on free or reduced lunch.

It can cover 100 percent of Driver’s Ed, including classroom and behind the wheel.

It opened April 13, 2026 and closed within just a few days.

Good news, it typically reopens quarterly.

🚨 FREE DRIVER’S ED IN WISCONSIN 🚨
**Driver Education Grant Reopens April 13, 2026 at 9:00 AM**
If you have a teen **14½ to under 19 years old**, this is important for parents.
The Wisconsin DMV Driver Education Grant may cover **100% of Driver’s Ed costs**, including classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training at authorized schools like Bestway Driving Academy.
⚠️ **Funding is limited and first-come, first-served.**
The last time the grant opened, funds were gone within a day.
**Who may qualify:**
Families with students eligible for **free or reduced lunch** may apply. If approved, the DMV provides a voucher (coupon) that is used with an authorized driving school — and the state pays the school directly.
