2013 Chevy Equinox | Water Pump Replacement

Not your average water pump job!

The most stressful part? Installing the three bolts that secure the water pump to its drive gear. One wrong move, and a bolt can fall into the timing case. Precision and patience are key on this job!

Now that everything is back together, the cooling system is holding, no leaks are present, and the oil has been changed. The next step is putting some miles on it and verifying everything is operating as it should before returning it to its owner.

Taking the time to do the job right and verifying my work.

Oh and the check engine light? It went out! Who knew a fresh exhaust manifold gasket, and installing missing nuts could make a difference?

-DTCS showing P0420 (catalyst efficiency) - No noticeable drivability concerns
-Checked fluids and found: low coolant, coolant intrusion in the oil
-Pressure test verified a leak, wetness found around the water pump area
-No strong head gasket indicators reported

These Ecotec engines use an internally driven water pump. When the pump fails, coolant can leak internally into the engine oil, potentially contaminating the lubrication system.

Knocking out the water pump task today, unlike most of these on the road, it does appear this one has been taken care of!

Helga’s 500 mile checkup 🔧

On her way back home, she decided to go into limp mode, flashing the CEL, and refused to go over 20 mph.

She’s due for an oil and filter change as well.

Everything else is bone dry and otherwise functional.

Upon further diagnosis, she’s got a sticking injector. I’ll take that as a win considering what I’ve been through with this car. 😂

30–45 minutes of my time and a spare injector I’ve got laying around, and she’s back at it.

Another problem found, diagnosed, and fixed.
