Rescue Our Waterways

Rescue Our Waterways Vote yes to the 1/4 cent sales tax to Rescue Our Waterways.

The Board of Commissioners resolved in an August 15, 2016 resolution to designate funds raised through the Article 46 one-quarter cent (1/4¢) sales and use tax as follows:

•Waterway Dredging and Maintenance – the Board of Commissioners intends to allocate Article 46 one-quarter cent (1/4¢) County sales and use tax proceeds for waterway dredging and maintenance and has appointed a waterway managem

ent board to prioritize the need for these purposes and administer the funds to accomplish the waterway dredging and maintenance. The Carteret County Finance Department estimates, based on current sales tax figures, that the one-fourth of a penny sales and use tax would generate approximately $2,500,000 annually. Those funds will then be matched by the State of NC in a 2 to 1 match, meaning the county would have over $7,000,000 annually.

Good morning, Carteret County! Heading to the polls today? Don’t forget to vote YES to rescue our waterways. A ¼ cent sales tax increase will help fund dredging and maintenance efforts to many of our frequently utilized waterways, including the Newport River, entrances to county Harbors of Refuge, Bulkhead Channel, Morgan Creek, Money Island Channel, and Bogue Inlet.

As residents of Carteret County, we know the importance of our waterways for both our economy and for leisure. Slightly raising the sales tax is a way to provide the funds to keep our precious waterways open. This tax increase will include both residents and visitors in the monetary effort to open and maintain our waterways, and provides residents with an alternative to an increase in property taxes. Vote YES on November 8th and rescue our waterways!

If this referendum IS NOT passed, there will be an increase in property taxes on our homes in Carteret County. It will take more time to raise the money needed to fund the waterway efforts, and funds will be raised strictly by residents. However, if this referendum IS passed, visitors can help us raise money in a timely and efficient manner by paying a local sales tax (which excludes groceries, gas, prescription medication, vehicles, and more). Vote YES!

This is why we should vote FOR a ¼ cent sales tax increase when we hit the polls on November 8th! This sales tax referendum will efficiently raise $2.5 million annually to help dredge and maintain our waterways in which we rely so heavily.

Currently, Carteret County is spending General Fund money to keep our waterways open and maneuverable. However, more money is needed to make sure ALL waterways are properly dredged and maintained. If we work together and vote YES for a local sales tax increase, we – along with those visiting our county – can fund and rescue our waterways!
