Automatic car washes are convenient… but your paint may be paying the price.

Those big spinning brushes don’t magically become clean after every vehicle. Dirt, sand, road grime, and tiny abrasive particles can stay trapped in the material and get dragged across the next car that comes through.

On darker paint—especially black—you’ll usually notice the damage as swirl marks: thousands of tiny scratches that become extremely obvious when sunlight or bright lighting hits the paint.

That’s why a car can technically be “clean” but still look hazy, dull, or covered in spiderweb-looking marks.

The problem usually gets worse over time.

One trip through a contact wash might not completely ruin your paint, but repeatedly running the vehicle through aggressive brushes can continue adding micro-scratches and marring to the clear coat. Eventually, the finish loses that deep, sharp reflection it had when the paint was healthier.

And no… wax at the end of the tunnel doesn’t magically remove those scratches.

Proper washing is about more than getting the dirt off.

A safer wash process uses proper lubrication, clean wash media, separate tools for heavily contaminated areas, careful drying methods, and techniques designed to minimize how much dirt gets physically dragged across the paint.

If your car is already covered in swirls, they usually can’t simply be “washed off.” Depending on their severity, machine polishing / paint correction may be needed to significantly improve the finish.

Take a flashlight to your paint tonight and look at it from an angle.
